CARY, N.C. – Members of the NC State men's tennis team will compete in the main draw of the Atlantic Tire Championships at the Cary Tennis Park beginning Monday. Sophomore Alexis Galarneau is set to play in the singles draw, and he will be joined by junior Michael Ogden in the doubles main draw. The event is part of the ATP Challenger Tour, a feeder circuit to the ATP World Tour. It marks the first action of the fall season for the Wolfpack.
Though the matches do not count as a part of collegiate play and will not be added to the players' NC State career records, the Challenger provides the team an opportunity to earn valuable ATP points and continue to focus on their development for professional tennis.
"Our program is process-based, and this is another application of the process for our guys to match their skill sets with some of the best players in the world," said head coach Kyle Spencer. "We are grateful to have the opportunity to play at the Cary ATP Challenger. This is another indication of our program's commitment to the full development of our players' professional aspirations. Playing in the Challenger also mirrors our message that is sent to recruits about how serious we are about helping in their pathway to professional tennis."
Galarneau aims to build off of a successful freshman campaign during which he posted a 25-10 mark in singles play. After earning six wins over ranked opponents and ending the season ranked 74th nationally, Galarneau was named to the Second Team All-ACC squad. He will face a qualifier or a lucky loser in the first round of competition at the Challenger.
Galarneau and Ogden earned a spot in the doubles draw after ending the 2017 dual season with a career-high ranking of No. 39. In just nine outings together at the top doubles spot, the pair defeated two ranked opponents and was up 6-5 against the 11th-ranked Notre Dame duo of Covalschi and Hagar before play was halted. The draw for doubles competition at the Challenger has not yet been released.
Juniors Georgiy Malyshev and Igor Saveljic also had the opportunity to compete in the Challenger, with each of them played in the qualifying singles draw Saturday.
Saveljic matched up against Julian Zlobinsky, taking the first set 7-6 (6). After being down 5-2 in the second set, Saveljic battled back but ultimately dropped the last two sets each by a narrow 7-5 score.
Malyshev also put up a great fight, pushing his qualifying match against Hans Hach Verdugo to two closely contested sets. Hach Verdugo won 6-4, 6-4 to advance in qualifying play.
