Recently, GoPack.com had the opportunity to catch up with former player Molly Birmingham Shaw about what she has been up to since she graduated from NC State.
Shaw was a member of the Wolfpack from 2002-06, and was a part of head coach Page Marsh's third recruiting class since the program was reinstated in 2000. The Cornelius, N.C., native finished with a 77.8 stroke average over the 26 tournaments she competed in.
She graduated in 2006 with a degree in interpersonal communication and currently resides in Charlotte, N.C., with her husband, Casey, and daughter, Maren.
What her career path has been like since graduation:
"I played on the Futures Tour (Symetra Tour) for three seasons while working at a club in West Palm Beach, Fla. Once I decided to stop playing, I went to work for a small cash brokerage (commodity trading) firm called Cameron Crittendon. It was pure luck finding them through a hiring agency, as I had no clue what I wanted to do after golf. I also barely knew what corn was, let alone that there's this whole major industry that feeds it to chickens, turkeys, and pigs!"
What her job entails on a day-to-day basis:
"It's a weird one! We manage corn train logistics for customers (such as Smithfield Foods, Butterball etc.), so I track and trace trains all day long for customers. While I'm doing that, I'm also a market facilitator. I put buyers and sellers of corn together. Just like a real estate broker, but with corn."
Personal life updates:
"I met my husband, Casey, on a work trip in 2012. He graduated from Cornell and has three Masters degrees. Anyone who knew me well in college would probably find that pretty comical since we're polar opposites. We were married in May of 2014 and our daughter, Maren, was born on January 4, 2016.
Playing golf on a regular basis:
"I think we'll wait until Maren is a little older before joining a club but I think we'll do it. I'd love for my dad to take her out after school so she can learn to play. I wish I could get out more, but with work and a toddler, I play about 10 times a year and the majority of those times are with customers."
What she misses about college golf and NC State:
"Having my best friends around all the time! College sports are great that way. You're forced into a family whether you like it or not. And lucky for me, I'm still very close with a few of my teammates."
What's changed in Raleigh since she graduated:
"My little sister graduated from NC State as well, so I've been back a couple of times but not onto campus. I ask my local friends from time to time if certain bars are still around and they say pretty much everywhere we used to go is gone or changed names. I did get a chance to play Lonnie Poole a few years ago. It's great that there's a place for the teams to be able to call home now."
Something she learned about being on a college golf team that's helped her with her job/life:
"At the time, I was not even remotely organized with anything. My roommates Leslie and Lorraine would pretty much plan my schedules each semester and made sure I showed up to practice on time, but some of that must have rubbed off along the way! I'm not at all that way now. In fact, some might even call me a little bit of planner. Lorraine has even trusted me to help plan her baby shower!"
"When you manage logistics, you need to be pretty organized. Even though we played on a team, golf is pretty independent sport. As a broker, you're on your own a lot. It's up to you how hard you want to work each day in some facets, and is the same with golf."
