Women’s golf leads way with sixth consecutive honor
RALEIGH – The NC State women's golf, women's tennis and rifle programs have received a Public Recognition Award from the NCAA for earning high scores in the most recent Academic Progress Rate (APR) compilation, as released by the organization on Wednesday afternoon.
This marks the sixth consecutive year the women's golf program has been recognized for its academic success, marking the longest streak for any NC State program to earn the distinguished honor. The program is ranked 19th in the latest GolfWeek national polls and recently clinched a spot in the NCAA Regional Championship for the 15th time in 16 years.
For rifle and women's tennis, this is the fifth time both programs have tabbed the recognition. Rifle wrapped up its season in March ranked ninth in the nation, as it sent two to the NCAA Championship and had two garner All-America honors.
The women's tennis team enjoyed its best year in program history this spring with an 18-9 (7-7 ACC) regular season record. In result the squad earned its second-straight bid to the NCAA Championship on Tuesday.
The Public Recognition Awards are given annually to teams with an APR in the top 10 percent of its sport. The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16 academic years.
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
