GREENSBORO, N.C. – Head coach Richard Sykes and sophomore Stephen Franken of the NC State men's golf team have earned honors from the Atlantic Coast Conference for the 2016-17 season, the league office announced Thursday morning. Sykes was named the 2017 ACC Coach of the Year and Franken was named to the All-ACC Team.
Â
In his 46th and final season at NC State, Sykes is earning the ACC Coach of the Year honor for the fifth time (1982, 1988, 1990, 2000). The 2001 Golf Coaches Hall of Fame inductee has guided the Wolfpack to an impressive 102-44-3 record this season and the program's ninth appearance in the NCAA Regionals over the course of the last 10 years. NC State has earned 17 victories over teams ranked within the Golfstat top 50 this season and recently won the Wolfpack Spring Open less than a month ago, defeating three top-50 foes en route to capturing the 53rd team tournament title of Sykes' career.
Â
Franken is NC State's active career and season stroke average leader. At 70.9 strokes per 18 holes, he ranks first on the team through 11 tournaments this season and averages 71.3 strokes per round throughout his young career of 22 tournaments. The Raleigh native has finished within the top 20 of a tournament field on eight occasions this season and ended up within the top 10 six times. His best finish of the season was a third-place result at the Bridgestone Intercollegiate in the fall, and he has completed all seven spring tournaments in the top 19 of the tournament field. Most recently, Franken tied for fifth at the 2017 ACC Championship.
Â
Twenty of Franken's 31 rounds (.645) have been at or under par this season and 30 have counted towards the team's score at official tournaments.
Â
Sykes and Franken continue the 2016-17 season May 15-17 at the NCAA Austin Regional. The 54-hole tournament will be played at the University of Texas Golf Club and is one of six NCAA Regional sites around the nation. From the six regional sites, 30 total teams and six individuals not associated with those teams will advance to the 2017 NCAA National Championships May 26-31 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.
