Recently, GoPack.com had the opportunity to catch up with former women's golf member Lindsay McGetrick about what she has been up to since she graduated from NC State.
A Highland Ranch, Colo., native, McGetrick garnered All-ACC honors as a senior and finished her career with a 75.65 stroke average. During her time with the Wolfpack she earned nine top 20 finishes, including five top 10 finishes in the 26 tournaments she played in.
She graduated in 2015 with a degree in sport management along with minors in coaching education and business administration, and currently resides in Westchester, N.Y. After college McGetrick played professionally on the Symetra Tour for one year, but has recently shifted to becoming a PGA certified teacher.
What sparked her interest in wanting to move to the teaching side of the business:
"I've always known that I want to work in the golf business, whether it was playing professionally, teaching or even coaching. After deciding to move away from playing golf full time, I decided that I wanted to stay in the business and had the opportunity to learn about the teaching side of golf and really enjoyed it. I'm currently working at The Golf Club of Purchase in Westchester, N.Y., and taking this year to really learn and grow as a teaching professional. I am hoping to start my teaching certification through the PGA in the next few months."
Her experience playing professionally:
"I started playing professionally when I graduated college in 2015, and started out playing mini tour events. In August of 2015 I went to LPGA Q-School and made it through to the second stage, which gave me close to full status on the Symetra Tour for 2016. I had such a great experience on the Symetra Tour being able to travel, compete and see new places that I probably would not have seen. There is a lot of travel involved and I spent a lot of time in my car, driving over 10,000 miles to events all over the country.
"I spent a lot of time practicing each week. A typical week on tour was arriving to the site on Monday and playing practice rounds and Pro-Am's throughout the week, and then beginning the tournament on Friday. On off weeks I would work on fixing the things that went wrong from the tournament before. Although there is a lot of practice and travel involved, I still found time to do some sightseeing. I had a great year playing on the Symetra Tour and I wouldn't trade those memories for anything."
Her favorite thing about golf and why she's chosen a career path to stay involved in the game:
"My favorite thing about golf is how it's a game for all ages. It doesn't matter if you start when you're five or 55, you can always pick up the game and enjoy it at all skill levels. Golf has been my life since I was seven years old. It's something that I'm very passionate about so there was no doubt in my mind that I wanted to stay in the golf business."
Recent life updates:
"I recently got engaged on February 11th. My fiancé proposed to me on the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City and my family was all there to surprise me as well! It was a very special day and I'm very excited to start this next chapter of my life and start planning my wedding!"
What she misses about collegiate golf and NC State:
"My four years at NC State were some of the best years of my life! I had some amazing teammates and coaches who helped influence and to shape me into who I am today. I would say that the thing I miss the most is having the team atmosphere and traveling to all of our tournaments."
Favorite memories from her time on the team:
"I made so many incredible memories at NC State. One of my favorite memories was hosting regionals at Lonnie Poole. The tournament was during my and Vivian's (Tsui) graduation, so we weren't able to walk at our ceremony, but it was so nice to be able to play at home and have all of the local support that we did.
"We ended up qualifying for nationals and all of our friends and family were there to celebrate with us and enjoy that moment. It was definitely a very special tournament! I also really cherish all of my teammates and the friendships that we made. We are all still very close and I got to spend all last year continuing to travel with some of them on the Symetra Tour."
How she got introduced to the game:
"I started playing golf around the age of seven. Both my mom and my dad introduced me to the game. My mom played golf at Furman and played professionally on the LPGA tour. My dad is a PGA teaching professional and teaches many top players on the PGA and LPGA tours. Growing up in a golf family got me to start the game a very young age. I fell in love with the game quickly and always had such a great support system to help me to play the best I could."
