Wolfpack hits season-high three home runs in the game
WILMINGTON, N.C. – No. 20 NC State baseball hit a season-high three home runs to earn an 8-5 road win at UNCW Wednesday evening at Brooks Field. Freshman Brad Debo and Will Wilson each hit their first collegiate homers, while junior Evan Mendoza hit his first of the season.
Â
The Wolfpack moves to 7-6 on the year and UNCW, preseason favorite to win the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), falls to 3-8.
Â
Game Recap
NC State struck first in the contest with a pair of runs in the second inning. Shane Shepard reached on an error by the UNCW first baseman and advanced to third base on a double down the left field line by Andy Cosgrove.
Â
Josh McLain stepped to the plate next for the Wolfpack and ripped a single up the middle to score Shepard and Cosgrove.
Â
In the third inning, NC State added a couple runs to extend the lead to 4-0 thanks to solo home runs from Debo and Mendoza. Debo smashed a 2-1 pitch over the wall in center field for his first collegiate homer and Mendoza followed with a blast to left field, his first round-tripper of the year.
Â
It was the first time this season that NC State has hit back-to-back home runs.
Â
The Wolfpack tacked on an unearned run in the fourth inning, as Brock Deatherage scored from second base on an error by UNCW's first baseman to push the NC State lead to 5-0. The Seahawks got a run back in the bottom of the frame after a solo home run by Preseason All-American Nick Feight.
Â
A fielder's choice plated the second run of the day for UNCW to trim the NC State lead to 5-2, as the Pack nearly turned a double play to end the inning.
Â
Wilson left the yard in the top of the sixth to give NC State a 7-2 lead on his first home run of his collegiate career. The Kings Mountain, N.C., native worked a full count on UNCW pitcher Clay Lockamon before unloading on his next delivery.
Â
A three-run homer by Mason Berne helped the Seahawks pull within two runs at 7-5 in the eighth inning, but the Wolfpack went to its bullpen and sophomore Austin Staley forced the next batter to ground into a double play to end the inning.
Â
NC State manufactured its final run of the game, as Deatherage stole third base and scored on an errant throw by the UNCW catcher to push the lead to 8-5.
Â
Staley slammed the door in the ninth with a 1-2-3 inning to earn his first collegiate save and preserve the win for NC State.
