Wolfpack takes series with Hurricanes, looks for sweep on Sunday
RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State baseball team overcame an hour and a half weather delay to earn a 5-2 win against the Miami Hurricanes Saturday night at Doak Field at Dail Park to clinch its first Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) series this season.
The Wolfpack moves to 12-8 on the year and 3-2 in ACC play, while the Hurricanes fall to 8-11 and 2-3 in conference action. Junior Tommy DeJuneas picked up the win for NC State with three innings pitched in relief and redshirt sophomore Austin Staley recorded his fourth save, while Evan McKendry took the loss for Miami (2-1).

Overall thoughts…
"I thought we played a great game," said head coach Elliott Avent. "Brian Brown, it's so great to have him back, boy pitching without him for the first month of the season has not been a lot of fun. He comes out tonight and I thought he looked like the Brian Brown of old, and I thought he looked really good. Then you get the rain and lightning delay followed by another rain delay there was no way we were going to send him back out there with all he has gone through.
"Then Tommy DeJuneas came in and I thought he pitched really well. Everybody just played well. How about Cody Beckman coming back from an injury and pitching the way he pitched it was amazing. We also got some big hits and made some big plays defensively. I just thought we played with a lot confidence and heart tonight."
Game Recap
Miami pushed across the game's first run in the top of the fifth, after Brandon Gali led off the inning with a double to left center and scored on a well-executed squeeze play by the Hurricanes.
The Wolfpack countered in the bottom of the frame with a pair of runs to take a 2-1 lead. Andy Cosgrove sparked the offense with a single down the right field line and Brock Deatherage followed with a walk. Josh McLain stepped to the plate next and ripped a double down the left field line to drive in Cosgrove.
A wild pitch allowed Deatherage to race home from third base to score to the second run for NC State.
In the seventh inning, the Pack stretched the advantage to 5-1. Cosgrove once again got things going with a double down the left field line and scored on a single through the right side off the bat of Deatherage. McLain followed with a single up the middle to put runners at first and second with one out.
Will Wilson tripled down the right field line to clear the bases, scoring Deatherage and McLain to give the Wolfpack a 5-1 lead.
Miami tried to mound a comeback in the top of the ninth, as they recorded back-to-back hits headlined by an RBI triple from Gali. The Pack went to its bullpen following the triple and Staley shut the door to tally his fourth save and seal the win.
