RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State women's tennis team partnered with the Abilities Tennis Association of North Carolina (ATANC) on Saturday morning to host the tenth annual Winter Chill Tournament at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
ATANC provides athletes with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to participate in competitive sports, enhancing the mental, physical, emotional and social well-being of its participants in the process. The organization reaches athletes throughout the state of North Carolina as well as neighboring states who compete in the sport of tennis at all levels of competition.
As the official hosts of the event, the Wolfpack players were given the unique opportunity to inspire and encourage ATANC's athletes by playing side-by-side with the participants in doubles matches, as well as keeping score and refereeing during the tournament. After the matches concluded, the NC State student-athletes also held a clinic for the participants.
Head coach Simon Earnshaw was grateful for the opportunity to continue the highly-anticipated tradition on the Wolfpack's calendar..
"All credit to Lou Welch, Cameron Rosenow, Abilities Tennis of North Carolina and all the volunteers, we are very fortunate to be able to host this event, which is now in its 10th year," he said. "Everyone with the program looks forward to meeting and interacting with all of the athletes and this year was no different. Thank you to everyone that makes this annual event such a special day."
Sophomore Anna Rogers also enjoyed giving back to the local community and is already looking forward to next year's event.
"Overall, the Winter Chill was a success once again," she explained. "The atmosphere was amazing, and everyone seemed to be having a blast. It was heart-warming to see each athlete playing tennis and showing so much joy while they did it. The whole team is so grateful for this volunteering opportunity and every year it gets better and better. We are looking forward to next year's tournament! Go Pack!"
