RALEIGH, N.C. – The Kevin Keatts era began with the second-highest scoring output in a coaching debut in program history as NC State defeated the VMI Keydets, 102-67, Friday night at PNC Arena. Seven Wolfpack players scored in double figures as NC State led wire-to-wire in the season opener.
NC State (1-0) was led by grad transfer Allerik Freeman, who dropped a team-high 17 points in his Wolfpack debut. The Pack delivered on Keatts' promise of an up-tempo, aggressive style of play, scoring 27 points off of 21 VMI turnovers. NC State finished with 21 points in transition, as well as 56 points in the paint.
The Pack jumped out to a 23-4 lead over the first eight minutes of the game and headed to the locker room with a 56-34 lead.
Dorn was red hot in the first half, putting up 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting to lead all scorers. Johnson added 9 points for the Pack with three assists, while Allerik Freeman grabbed six rebounds in the first period.
Nine of Lennard Freeman's points came in the second half to lead all scorers, including a perfect 5-of-5 mark from the free throw line. Johnson got his teammates involved as he dished out six assists in the second frame.
Up next, the Pack is scheduled to host the Charleston Southern Buccaneers on Sunday, Nov. 12. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. at PNC Arena.
