DURHAM, N.C. – The NC State women's soccer team faced its third straight top 25 ACC opponent on Thursday evening when it traveled to No. 4 Duke, and dropped a 2-0 result at Koskinen Stadium. The Wolfpack moves to 8-4-1 (1-3-1 ACC), while the Blue Devils improve to 12-1-0 (5-0-0 ACC).
COACH SANTORO'S TAKE
Thoughts on performance against Duke
"I thought we controlled the tempo of the game most of the time, but there were a couple of moments that we didn't manage," said head coach Tim Santoro. "We knew they were good in transition and gave them one at the end of the half and a free kick early in the second. Other than that I thought we were really good and kept them pretty quiet. It's about results right now though and we have to find some."
On facing third straight top 25 ACC opponent
"We're fine. We know in this league you're going to have some tough stretches. Last year we went through a four-game losing streak against four teams that were all in the top 20. We still have half of the ACC left with a lot of games at home. We're fully confident that we're going to end up where we want to be at the end of the month."
On preparing for Pitt Sunday
"Every ACC game you learn about yourself and prepare. We'll be ready to go Sunday. Pitt's a really tough team to play at their place. We've traveled enough to know how to play on the road and we'll be ready to give the same kind of effort on Sunday."
HOW IT HAPPENED
Cailyn Boch had an early opportunity with a header on Hannah Keogh's corner kick in the fourth minute but it was saved. Paige Griffiths tallied the Pack's other shot on goal in the first half with a strike from 20 yards out.
Duke took a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute, as Kayla McCoy charged down the left side of the field into the six-yard box and finished her shot inside the far right post.
The Blue Devils doubled its lead in the 50th minute with a shot by Chelsea Burns from inside 10 yards on the left side with a double assist. After the second goal the Pack tallied four shots, with the best opportunity of the half coming in the 69th minute with Frances Henshall's shot inside the six-yard box on a pass by Rachel Cox that was saved.
In the final 20 minutes of the contest neither team was able to create a scoring opportunity.
