RIO de JANEIRO-Â NC State swimming and diving's Ryan Held created Wolfpack history on Sunday evening at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, as he helped the United States win a gold medal in the 4x100 freestyle relay.
The first international meet of his career, he swam the third leg of the finals with teammates Caeleb Dressel, Michael Phelps and Nathan Adrian inside the Olympic Aquatics Stadium. Held posted a split time of 47.73 while the relay squad stopped the clock at 3:09.92. In the prelims Held swam the second leg of the relay, posting a split time of 47.79 to help Team USA notch a time of 3:12.38.
For head coach Braden Holloway, this marks the first gold medalist that he and his staffed has coached. Held is the fourth NC State swimmer to help the US win gold in the 4x100 relay. Steve Rerych won two relay golds in Mexico City in 1968 (in the 4x100 and the 4x200), David Fox was part of the relay team that won gold in 1996 in Atlanta (he swam prelims only) and Cullen Jones was on the team that won in Beijing in 2008 and again on the team that won silver in 2012 in London. Duncan Goodhew also won a relay bronze in the 400 medley in 1980 in Moscow swimming for Great Britain.
"We're so proud of Ryan and his accomplishment at the highest stage in our sport. You can't get any better. A gold medal is just unbelieveable, and it couldn't have happened to a better kid. He's a team player every single day for NC State and Team USA, and we're so elated for him," said head coach Braden Holloway.
"This was his first international meet wearing a USA cap and he walked away with a gold medal. The 400 free relay is one of the most anticipated and biggest events on the Olympic stage, so hats off to all of the hard work Ryan's put in. He's helped to build our program to what it is today and has developed a great relationship with Todd DeSorbo to get to this point. Wolfpack nation is thrilled for him, and know that his family couldn't be happier watching him win a gold medal."
Competition for the Pack will continue Tuesday, as Simonas Bilis and Soren Dahl will both make their debuts in Rio. Bilis is slated to swim the 100m freestyle while Dahl will compete on Denmark's 4x200m freestyle relay. Prelims are slated for a 12 p.m. ET start while finals will commence at 9 p.m. ET.
The swimming portion of the Olympic Games will run on television from Aug. 6-13 and be broadcast via NBC. On most days, NBC primetime programming will air from 8 p.m. to midnight ET/PT; daytime from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET/PT; late night from 12:35 a.m. to 1:35 a.m. ET/PT; and replays from 1:35 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. ET/PT.
