Cisneros comes to Raleigh from Armstrong State
RALEIGH- The NC State women's tennis team added another valuable player to its 2016-17 roster on Wednesday as NCAA Division II standout Alejandra Cisneros will join the program in August, as announced by head coach Simon Earnshaw.
Cisneros, a Tampico, Mexico, native, comes to Raleigh after playing for two years at Armstrong State University. She will arrive with a wealth of competitive experience at the national championship level, as she helped to lead the Pirates to back-to-back NCAA Division II National Championship titles and won the 2015 Singles Championship title.Â
"Alejandra is a player that I've followed for a long time. From speaking with her early on, it was clear that her attitude and goals fit very well with our team and university's culture," said Earnshaw.Â
"Although she is limited in eligibility I expect her to make a tremendous impact on our program and among the ACC. Gina and I couldn't be happier and are eager to get to work when Ale joins us in August along with our other two incoming recruits, Anna (Rogers) and Adriana (Reami). Go Pack!"
During her career at Armstrong State, Cisneros won the USTA/ITA Super Bowl Singles Championship in the fall of 2015, along with the USTA/ITA NCAA II Singles title. As a result she qualified and played in the 2015 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships.Â
In addition to her three national titles with Armstrong State, she is a two-time All-American in singles play and holds a 47-0 singles record in dual match play. In 2015 she was named Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year by the Peach Belt Conference, becoming the fourth player at Armstrong to accomplish the feat.Â
"When I came in for my official visit, I felt very welcomed; I loved the spirit of the Wolfpack. I chose NC State because I felt as though it had everything that I wanted and more when it comes to academics and tennis," said Cisneros.Â
"I look forward to a big step in my life, not only as a student but also as an athlete. I think the combination of a good tennis program with great coaches will help me to improve on and off the court."
Throughout her career, Cisneros has been ranked has high as No. 1 in singles play among the NCAA Division II level, 18th in the ITF Girls Junior World Rankings and No. 753 in the WTA Singles Rankings.Â
She holds a strong resume at the highest level of junior tournament play having played in the French Open, Wimbledon and US Open Junior events in 2013. She also holds titles in the ITF Yucatan Cup in singles and ITF Copa Gerdau and Astrid Bowl in doubles, which were all accomplished in 2013. Cisneros also represented Mexico in the U16 Junior Fed Cup, helping the country to finish fifth.Â
Cisneros, who will be a junior in the classroom this fall, plans to major in accounting at NC State.
