Program receives team and scholar-athlete recognition for academic excellence
TEMPE, Ariz.- The NC State women's tennis team received three academic awards on Thursday from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), as the program earned the All-Academic Team award and Tayla Stenta and Taylor Zaytoun were named ITA Scholar-Athletes for the 2015-16 season.
The program has a strong reputation for its excellence in the classroom, as this marks the fourth time in six years that the Wolfpack has landed on the list. The team had a successful season on the court, as it finished at No. 40 among the team poll, marking the highest final ranking since 2011, and compiled a regular season record of 15-12 (6-8 ACC).
NC State additionally earned its first trip to the NCAA Championship since 2013 and marked program history with six wins in conference play- the most in a given season for the Pack.
Stenta, a junior from Melbourne, Australia, collected 15 doubles wins and eight singles victories in her second season with the Pack. Her season was highlighted by a straight-set singles win over No. 24 Syracuse's Libi Mesh and a doubles win with Martina Frantova over No. 15 Ebony Panoho and Alexandra Osborne of Arizona State at the NCAA tournament. Stenta is a biological sciences major.
Zaytoun, a Raleigh native, graduated from the university in May with a 4.0 cumulative GPA in fashion and textile management and as a top-10 Caterpillar Scholar-Athlete. In her final season she collected two wins a piece in singles and doubles action in the fall. In the spring she played in the starting lineup in singles and doubles at the No. 2 spot in the Pack's matchup with UNC-Chapel Hill.
The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All varsity letter winners should be factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2015 and spring 2016).
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters (including freshman through senior year).
