
Frantova Becomes Fourth In School History to Earn NCAA Singles Bid

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – No. 45 Martina Frantova of the No. 35 NC State women's tennis team became the fourth player in program history to earn a bid to the NCAA Singles Championship, as this year's selections were announced by the league office Wednesday evening.

Frantova is one of 49 at-large selections by the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Subcommittee chosen to compete in the 2016 singles tournament. In total, 64 of the nation's most elite Division I players will contend for the championship title on May 25-30 following the conclusion of the team championship in Tulsa, Okla.

In her first season at NC State, the Wolfpack standout compiled a 30-13 overall record, 8-6 in conference play. She maintained a national ranking throughout the entire regular season, listing as high as No. 35. Frantova has collected 11 wins over nationally-ranked opponents highlighted by defeats of then, No. 41 Kaitlyn McCarthy of No. 8 Duke and previously ranked No. 42 Anna Shkudun of No. 24 Syracuse during the regular season, along with victories over formerly ranked No. 5 Josie Kuhlman of Florida and No. 37 Kennedy Schaffer of Georgia during the fall tournament season. During her first fall season with the Pack, Frantova was crowned champion of the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Clay Court Invitational in Orlando, Fla., the team's final competition in 2015.

The Slovakia native made an immense impact at the top of the singles and doubles lineups throughout the Pack's entire historical season in 2016. Her 14 victories at No. 1 singles and 9 wins at No. 1 doubles during the regular season earned her an ACC Player of the Week award following the final week of regular-season play as well as an All-ACC Second Team honor.

Frantova, along with the rest of the Wolfpack, is set to begin competition in NCAA regional play May 13 in Auburn, Ala., when it faces Arizona State in the first round of competition.
