
Men’s Swimming and Diving Puts 11 On All-ACC Academic Team

Derek Hren earns third honor in as many years
GREENSBORO, N.C.- The NC State men's swimming and diving team had 11 student-athletes named to the 2015-16 All-ACC Academic Team, as announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon.
James Bretscher, Jon Burkett, Soren Dahl, Ryan Held, Derek Hren, Anton Ipsen, Justin Ress, Andreas Schiellerup, Patrik Schwarzenbach, Austin Snyder and Hennessey Stuart represent the Wolfpack men on this year's list. This marks the highest number from any program in the conference.
For Hren, a 2016 ACC Champion in the 100 breaststroke and All-American in the 200 and 400 medley relays, this marks his third honor in as many years. Dahl, Held, Ipsen, Schiellerup, Snyder and Stuart earned the second mention of their careers.
Combined with the five Wolfpack women that landed on the list, NC State's 16 student-athletes marks the highest number in program history to receive the honor.
Bretscher, a freshman from Knoxville, Tenn., earned team points at the ACC Championship in three events, finishing 11th in the 100 and 200 butterfly and 17th in the 100 backstroke.
Burkett, a freshman from Medford, N.J., helped the 400 medley relay squad finish eighth at the NCAA Championship to earn first team All-America honors.
Dahl, Held and Schiellerup are three of the four 400 freestyle relay team members that captured a title at ACCs and NCAAs, marking the first NCAA relay title for the program and the ACC.
Dahl and Held also helped the 800 free relay earn the program's third-straight title at ACCs and a runner-up finish at NCAAs, while Held and Schiellerup competed on the 200 free relay that won a title at ACCs and placed second at NCAAs.
A Copenhagen, Denmark, native, Dahl recently punched his ticket to the 2016 Olympic Games as a member of Denmark's 4x200m free relay team. At NCAAs he earned honorable mention All-America honors in the 200 free, and tabbed All-ACC honors in the 100 free, 200 free and 200 individual medley at the conference championship.
Held earned All-America honors in the 50, 100 and 200 free, and garnered gold medals in the 50 and 100 at ACCs. He additionally placed third in the 200 free and helped the 200 medley relay team earn a first-place finish at the conference championship.
At ACCs Ipsen swept the 500 and 1,650 free events for the second-straight year, then proceeded to earn All-America honors in both events for the second consecutive season at NCAAs. The Birkerod, Denmark, native recently earned an Olympic berth in the 400m free.
Ress, a Cary, N.C., native, was named ACC Freshman of the Year as he earned top-eight finishes in the 200 free, 200 back and 200 individual medley at ACCs, and competed in the 200 IM and 200 back at NCAAs. He was also a member of the successful 800 free relay at ACCs and NCAAs.
Schiellerup earned honorable mention All-America honors in the 50 free and 100 back at NCAAs and collected top-five finishes in both events at ACCs.
The school record holder in the 200 breaststroke, Schwarzenbach was a relay alternate for the Pack at NCAAs, as he earned top-15 finishes in the 100 and 200 breaststroke at ACCs.
Snyder was an NCAA Championship competitor in the 400 IM and 200 butterfly, as he earned top-eight finishes in both events as well as the 1,650 freestyle at ACCs. The senior from Charlotte, N.C., leaves NC State holding top-10 program times in four events.
Stuart, a backstroke specialist, earned runner-up finishes in the 100 and 200 back at ACCs and first team All-America honors in both events at NCAAs. He also was a member of the 200 and 400 medley relay teams that earned top-10 finishes at NCAAs and a part of the 200 medley relay team that won a gold medal at ACCs.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career for undergraduate students. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
