
No. 44 Wolfpack Advances to ACC Championship Quarterfinals

CARY, N.C. – The No. 44 NC State men's tennis team earned a 4-2 first-round win over No. 73 Clemson on Thursday in the second round of the ACC Championships. NC State improves to 18-13, 5-7 ACC with the win, while Clemson falls to 16-14, 5-7 ACC.
The Pack earned match points from doubles play, Thomas Weigel, Igor Saveljic and Ivan Saveljic to clinch the sixth win over a ranked opponent this season.
Match Recap:
NC State jumped out to an early lead in doubles, as the Pack picked up wins on courts one and two. The Saveljic twins dominated their opponent with a 6-2 win from the second court. Clemson leveled the doubles scores with a victory from the third spot.
On court one, No. 52 Norenius and Weigel had a come-from-behind victory to clinch the point over Luke Johnson and Christian Harris. The duo trailed for most of the match but had a big break to take a 6-5 lead. The senior duo then won in the tiebreak 7-4 to claim the point and give NC State a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
Clemson took an 2-1 lead early in singles play with straight-set wins on courts one and three. No. 54 Norenius fell 6-4, 6-2 to No. 121 Alex Favrot on court one and No. 95 Nick Horton fell 7-5, 6-2 to Johnson on court three.
Minutes after Clemson took its first lead of the match, Igor Saveljic picked up his 12th win of the year to level the match at 2-2 with a 6-4, 6-4 victory on court four.
No. 102 Weigel then extended the Pack's lead with a 7-6, 6-2 win on court two. Weigel is now one win away from matching the school record for most wins in a single spring season with 22.
Both of the Pack's remaining matches came down to the third set. Shoti Meparidze was tied 4-4 on court five when Ivan served out his match for the 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 victory on court five to clinch the match.
