NC State fell 5-2 to No. 10 Virginia Saturday afternoon
RALEIGH - No. 42 NC State women's tennis dropped its first home match to its highest ranked conference opponent of the season Saturday afternoon. No. 10 Virginia defeated the Pack 5-2 to snap its undefeated home record, now 6-1.
The Wolfpack is now 9-5, 2-3 in the ACC while Virginia improves 10-5, 5-1 in the conference.
Competition between the ACC foes began outdoors Saturday afternoon, as the Cavaliers were first to put points on the board with two doubles wins before play was moved indoors due to rain early into singles action.
Bianca Moldovan and Amanda Rebol captured match wins for the Wolfpack against a top-tier Cavaliers roster. Moldovan swept No. 64 Skylar Morton 6-1, 7-6 (8-6) at the No. 3 singles for a career highest ranked victory. Rebol did not allow the delay of play affect her as she resumed her first set lead and captured a straight-set win of 6-3, 6-1 over Victoria Olivarez Saturday afternoon.
No. 61 Martina Frantova battled through the toughest matchup of the day as she faced No. 4 Danielle Collins at the No. 1 singles. After dropping the first set 3-6, Frantova rallied throughout the entire second set, never trailing by more than one point and maintained a tie throughout most of the set. Frantova dropped the match to her No. 4 nationally ranked opponent after a close 7-6 (7-4) second set.
"We showed improvement against Virginia compared to last year's meeting. It's a great sign having two of our freshman get a couple of straight-set wins. I think the issue came from our doubles play. We've been working on that a lot during practice but what we've been doing is just not translating into our matches. When you're playing against a team that's as experienced and as good as Virginia you can't let it get a lead on you. I'm frustrated with our doubles play but I think that if we can have the optimistic attitude that we've had, and sometimes even show during the warm-up, it's going to make things a lot easier." - Simon Earnshaw, head coach
