RALEIGH, N.C. – After splitting a pair of matches on the road last weekend, the 25th-ranked NC State men's tennis team returns to the friendly confines of J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center with its perfect home record for four matches over four days.
NC State will open the four-match stretch with UNC-Wilmington Thursday at 2 p.m. The Pack will then face No. 6 Texas Tech in a top-25 showdown Friday at 4 p.m. The team will get Saturday off before a Sunday doubleheader with matches against No. 55 Old Dominion at 1 p.m. and UNC-Greensboro at 4:30 p.m.
The matches will be a great opportunity for the Pack to earn wins over ranked opponents as a team and individually. In total, two ranked teams, four ranked singles players and three ranked doubles duos will visit Raleigh this weekend.
Scouting Reports:
UNCW:
UNCW enters the match with a 3-3 record and a one-match winning streak. In its last time out, the Seahawks took down Norfolk State University. This season UNCW already has an ACC win with a 4-1 victory of Miami.
NC State holds an 8-2 all-time advantage over the Seahawks with the last win coming in 2015. However, the Seahawks have defeated the Wolfpack in two of the last three meetings.
Texas Tech:
Texas Tech is arguably the strongest opponent the Pack will face in the non-conference portion of the season. The Red Raiders have three players in the ITA singles rankings and two pairs in the ITA doubles rankings. As a team, they have dominated the season with a 14-1 overall record and six wins over ranked opponents.
The team's only loss of the season came at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships to eventually national champion North Carolina.
The match up marks the first ever meeting between the two programs.
ODU:
Old Dominion enters the match on a five-match wining streak. After losing their first two matches of the season, the Monarchs are 7-1. ODU also has one ranked singles player and a ranked doubles team.
The teams are tied at 11-11 in the overall series, and NC State owns the last win in the series from 2010. NC State had a strong rivalry with the Monarchs in the 2000s. The teams played each other in a home and away series for eight straight years.
UNC-G:
UNC-Greensboro is NC State's final opponent of the weekend. This season, UNCG is 3-1. The Spartans will play North Carolina Wednesday ahead of the clash with the Pack.
In the overall series, NC State has been nothing short of dominant, winning 7-0 in the last seven meetings between the programs. Additionally, NC State holds a 14-1 overall record against the Spartans.
Despite the overall wins, members of UNG's team did test the Pack in the fall season, having successful outings at NC State's fall tournament and picking up wins in singles play over members of the Pack.
Pack in the Polls:
The NC State men's tennis team has cracked the top-25 of ITA rankings, checking in at No. 25 in the latest poll from the organization. The Wolfpack holds a 10-3 record and also has two individuals listed in the singles rakings.
The jump is a five-spot improvement from last week's team rankings and is the highest of the season for the program. In addition to the team, Nick Horton leads the Pack in individual rankings at No. 72 and Simon Norenius is ranked No. 83.
Horton is 9-2 on the season, playing exclusively at the top-two spots in the line up. Norenius has also split time with Horton between the top lineup spots and is 10-1 on the season with a trio of wins over ranked competition.
Dynamic Duo:
Despite the Pack's struggles in doubles play this season, Thomas Weigel and Michael Ogden are forming a team-leading doubles duo. The pair leads the team with a 6-3-duel season doubles record.
Weigel entered the year ranked 11th in school history in doubles wins. The senior is officially on record watch, as he has moved up to No. 7 in school history with 54 careers doubles wins.
Last Tine Out:
Last week, NC State split its weekend matches, dropping a match at now-ranked No. 15 Northwestern on Friday before defeating Michigan State University on Sunday. This season, the Pack has taken down three ranked opponents.
