197-pound Sophomore Defeats Two Ranked Wrestlers
RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State sophomore Michael Boykin was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week Tuesday, after leading the Wolfpack to a pair of dual match victories with individual wins over a pair of nationally-ranked wrestlers last week in the 197-pound weight class.
Boykin, from Coatesville, Pa., defeated Pitt's 25th-ranked Nick Bonaccorsi, 3-2, in Pittsburgh, Pa., as the ACC-leading Wolfpack won its fourth straight conference match of the year, downing the Panthers, 28-6, on Friday. The next day in Morgantown, W.Va., Boykin upset West Virginia's Jacob Smith, who was ranked eighth nationally in the NCAA Coaches Panel rankings, with a 5-3 triumph in sudden victory in the second overtime session. NC State's win against the Mountaineers was its 20th of the season, setting a single-season school mark for dual match triumphs.
The wins boosted Boykin's record on the year to 14-5 and gives him three straight victories against nationally-ranked foes. He moved up to No. 15 (from 18) in the InterMat individual rankings this week.
Up Next: The Pack will be in road action this weekend, as NC State will travel to #11 Nebraska on Feb. 6 for a 8 p.m. (ET) dual.
