RALEIGH – The NC State women's tennis team is excited to partner once again with the Abilities Tennis Association of North Carolina (ATANC) to host the ninth annual Winter Chill Tournament. The event will take place at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center on Saturday, December 3 and is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m.
ATANC provides athletes with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to participate in competitive sports, enhancing the mental, physical, emotional and social well-being of its participants in the process. The organization reaches athletes throughout the state of North Carolina as well as neighboring states who compete in the sport of tennis at all levels of competition.
The Winter Chill Tournament is one of ATANC's most popular events, attracting more than 70 participants and 60 volunteers from eight local high schools and various organizations last year.
"The tournament is such a special day for our athletes, who have intellectual disabilities," said Lou Welch, ATANC's Executive Director. "This event is one of the highlights of their year. It really makes the athletes feel like 'stars' for the day."
As the official hosts of the event, the Wolfpack players are given the unique opportunity to inspire and encourage ATANC's athletes by playing side-by-side with the participants in doubles matches, as well as to keep score and referee during the tournament. After the matches conclude, the NC State student-athletes will also hold a clinic for the participants.
"I am really looking forward to helping in the Winter Chill event tomorrow," said NC State junior Tayla Stenta. "This will be my third year participating and it is always really rewarding to see how much fun the athletes have. Lou and her team do a great job of organizing the day, and it is always great to see how our sport can bring joy to so many of the kid!"
Those attending are encouraged to continue the tradition of bringing new or gently used t-shirts for students to bring to Guatemala on a mission trip this February.
