RALEIGH, N.C. – After opening the season at home last weekend, the eighth-ranked NC State rifle team will head to Akron, Ohio, this weekend to take on the host Akron Ohio, as well as compete against No. 2 West Virginia. The competition is slated to begin at 8:30 a.m. inside the Robert A. Pinn Shooting Range.
The Wolfpack enters the match with a 0-1 record on the season, as the squad was outdone by West Virginia to open the year.
Last season, NC State also traveled to Akron, earning a 4637-4630 Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) win against the Zips. Saturday's match will just be collegiate matches, while Sunday's event will be the GARC match against Akron.
Jump in the Rankings
Thanks to a strong season-opening performance, breaking the program record, NC State has jumped from No. 13 in the rankings to No. 8 in the polls, its highest listing since 1982. The ranking is significant because the top eight programs advance to the NCAA Championships.
Stellar Debut
In her first appearance in a Wolfpack suit, graduate student Lauren Phillips fired a personal-best score of 595 in the air rifle competition to lead NC State in the event. She also had a solid showing in smallbore, compiling a total of 581.
