NC State wins 17 of 20 events contested
RALEIGH- The NC State swimming and diving team opened its 2016-17 season in dominating fashion, winning 17 of the 20 events contested on the first day of its two-day dual meet at home with Wisconsin on Friday evening inside the Casey Aquatic Center.
After grabbing a quick lead in the relay events and never letting go, NC State's men lead, 136-50, while its women hold a 102-84 lead over the Badgers after the first day of competition.
In addition to its strong performance in the water the Wolfpack set four pool records, notched 15 NCAA 'B' standard times and two divers earned their NCAA Zone qualification marks.Â
Quoting The Coaches
Swimming
"I thought it was a pretty strong first day for us. We had some areas where we were really good in and I'm excited about where we are to start off the season," said head coach Braden Holloway. "In others we expected the team to be where we were today, but overall I think everyone was just ready to compete. This was the latest we've gone into the season before competing, and I think it showed today that we were eager to get in the water and race.Â
"The women are in a pretty good team battle with Wisconsin and just have to come back tomorrow morning and finish the job that they started today. With the guys I don't want them to lay off the pedal. I want them to do as well as they did today and we'll see how they bounce back."
Diving
"It was a good day on the boards," said head diving coach Yahya Radman. "On our first list we missed the mark, and it became a test of coming back from behind in the second list. We built today to mimic Zones, as Stewart (Spanbauer) qualified for his first time for Zones and Harrison (Mitchell) qualified to return to the championship in their second list.Â
"On the women's side our freshmen did what they needed to do. They showed consistency and poise with Madeline (Kline) as our top finisher taking fourth overall."
Wolfpack Relays
NC State showed its dominance and depth in relays on day one, as the Pack won all four contested.
On the women's side the Pack earned a one-two finish in the 400 medley relay, as the first-place relay team of Alexia Zevnik, Kayla Brumbaum, Krista Duffield and Courtney Caldwell posted a pool record time of 3:36.89.Â
The men's team also picked up a win in its event, as the squad of Hennessey Stuart, Derek Hren, Ryan Held and Scott Johnson touched the wall at 3:12.11.
In the 200 free relay the Wolfpack women's squad of Ky-Lee Perry, Natalie Labonge, Lotta Nevalainen and Krista Duffield stopped the clock at 1:30.91, while the men's quartet of Justin Ress, Soren Dahl, Johnson and Held capped off Friday's competition with a mark of 1:19.87 to complete the relay sweep.Â
Top Individual Performances
Both Hannah Moore and Anton Ipsen had dominating performances in the 1,650 freestyle, as both set pool records and notched their NCAA 'B' cuts in their season debuts. Moore swam a time of 16:00.23 and her 1,000 free split time of 9:43.49 also stands as a pool record. Ipsen touched the wall at 14:57.58 while teammate Adam Linker placed second with a NCAA 'B' cut mark of 15:16.68.
Moore additionally picked up a win in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:01.09.
Held won his only individual event of the day as he posted a NCAA 'B' cut time of 19.47 in the men's 50 freestyle, while Soren Dahl picked up wins in the 200 IM and 200 freestyle, posting NCAA 'B' cuts in both performances. He touched the wall at 1:47.06 in the 200 IM and 1:37.78 in the 200 free.Â
The Wolfpack men managed to sweep the podium in two events, the 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke. Hren and Zack Warner each earned their 'B' cuts in the 100 breast with times of 54.87 and 55.31, and Patrick Schwarzenbach rounded out the top three as he touched the wall at 57.04.
In the men's 100 back Andreas Schiellerup was the top performer with a mark of 47.92, while Stuart placed second with a time of 48.13. Both times were enough to better the NCAA 'B' standard, while Jabari Baptiste took third after stopping the clock at 50.10.
On the women's side Zevink earned top-two finishes in both of her individual events, as she won the 200 IM and placed second in the 100 back. Additionally, Brumbaum won the 100 breast and Elise Haan touched first in the 100 back. All four times clocked were enough for NCAA 'B' cuts.Â
Diving
Harrison Mitchell and Stewart Spanbauer earned top-three finishes in the men's one-meter dive, as Mitchell won with a score of 616.58 and Spanbauer placed third with a mark of 585.61. Both divers qualified for the 2017 NCAA Zone B Championships.
