NC State looks strong in doubleheader sweep
RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State softball team looked strong in its first appearance of the fall season Friday evening to earn a doubleheader sweep against the Elon Phoenix. The Wolfpack won game one of the twin bill, 2-1, and shut out in the Phoenix in the second matchup, 5-0.
Â
The Pack collected 11 hits on the day, five of which were extra base hits, while limiting Elon to seven hits and zero extra base hits.

Rychcik's Review
"It's good to get out and compete against someone other than yourselves," said fifth-year head coach Shawn Rychcik. "I thought the pitching was really good on the day, with only one run allowed and one walk issued. It was nice to see some big hits in key situations to drive in some runs and we were pretty sharp defensively.
Â
"It was a good start. We've got a long way to go, but I'm happy with our freshmen getting out there to play and two wins is always a good day."
Â
Game One Summary
- After Elon broke the scoreless tie in game one with a run in the top of the fourth, NC State answered in the bottom of the frame to knot the score again.
- Sophomore Cheyenne Balzer drew a leadoff walk and Kassidy Wood relieved her on the base paths to pinch-run.
- Wood advanced to second on a groundout by Jade Caraway and scored on an RBI single from sophomore Jessica Moore.
- The Wolfpack plated its second run the following inning, as junior Alyssa Compton led off the fifth with a double to left center and moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt.
- Senior Tyler Ross reached on an infield single and attempted to steal second base a few pitches later, but was thrown out allowing Compton to scamper home on the play to make it 2-1.
- Compton led the Wolfpack at the plate with a 2-for-2 performance, while freshman Haley Finn, Moore and Ross each had one hit.
-In the circle, sophomore Brittany Nimmo earned the win with five innings pitched allowing five hits, one earned run with three strikeouts and did not walk a batter.
- Junior Harli Hubbard nailed down the save with two hitless innings of relief and fanned two batters in the process.
Â
Game Two Summary
- Peyton Silverman stole the show in game two of the doubleheader, as the freshman hurled a complete game two-hit shutout. She struck out six and did not allow a baserunner in the first, fourth, sixth or seventh.
