NC State releases challenging slate of competition
RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State rifle head coach Keith Miller announced the program's competition slate for the 2015-16 season on Thursday.
Â
"We'll start a little earlier than we normally do this year," said Miller. "We have a match at VMI and we're hoping to take the whole team, which is important because with four freshmen you don't know who will put things together the quickest. So that match, we'll just have everyone show us what they have and then sort things out afterwards.
Â
"We have a chunk of time between our first match and our second match, so we'll work on what we learned in our first match. We have nearly a month until our next competition, which will be important as we face GARC foe Navy."
Â
The Wolfpack will open the season on Saturday, Sept. 26, when it travels to Lexington, Va., for the first South Eastern Air Rifle Conference (SEARC) match of the year held at VMI. NC State will next be in action at Navy for a Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) match on Oct. 17.
Â
NC State will compete in the SEARC 3 and against GARC foe Nebraska on Oct. 31 at The Citadel. On Sunday (Nov. 1), the Pack will take on the host Bulldogs inside the Inuoye Marksmanship Center.
Â
A trip to Akron, Ohio, will see the Wolfpack face Ohio State on Nov. 7 and Ole' Miss along with the host Zips the following day (Nov. 8). NC State will complete the fall portion of its schedule on Nov. 22 when it takes on Memphis in a match at Jacksonville State.
Â
"The matches at Akron are going to be really cool, because they're going to be a different format than what we're used to," Miller Added. "This year Akron's hosting the NCAA Championships and they're not doing it at their normal range.
Â
"They're bringing in a 26-point target system, similar to what we've done in the past for air rifle, with 24 people shooting at the same time in a field house. It will essentially be a rehearsal match for the NCAAs since it will be using the same system."
Â
The Pack opens its 2016 competition slate in West Point, N.Y., as the squad will take on Kentucky (Jan. 17) and the host Army Black Knights on Jan. 18. SEARC 6 will be held at The Citadel on Jan. 23 with NC State taking part in the event.
Â
NC State's final dual match of the season will be at West Virginia, the defending National Champion, on Jan. 30. From there, the squad will compete in SEARC 9 and the NCAA Qualifier on Feb. 20 at The Citadel's rifle range.
Â
From Feb. 26-28, the GARC Championships will convene in Oxford, Miss., on the Ole' Miss campus. The Citadel will serve as the host for the SEARC Championships the following weekend (March 5).
Â
Akron will host the 2016 NCAA Championships March 11-12.
