RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State offensive lineman Joe Thuney has been named a semifinalist for the 2015 William V. Campbell Trophy, which recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation.
There were 135 candidates nominated by their schools as the best all-around student-athlete on their respective teams. Each nominee must meet the highest of standards based on their performance in the classroom, on the field and as outstanding leaders and citizens in the community. The candidates come from all levels of play in the NCAA and the NAIA.
Thuney earned his undergraduate degree in Accounting, with a minor in Spanish, in May of 2014. He is a four-time ACC Academic Honor Roll recipient and was named to the 2014 ACC All-Academic Team. He is currently pursing a second undergraduate degree in International Studies.
Being active in community service efforts, Thuney worked with a special needs clinic, the Wolfpack women's clinic, helped organize our "Lift for Life" event for Uplifting Athletes and participated in the "Wolfpack Blitz" multiple times – where student-athletes read at schools across Wake County during a one-week period. Has also made various appearances at elementary schools.
When the offensive line attended the Duke Children's Hospital's Dance-a-thon, he befriended a young boy who has a rare disease that causes almost constant, excruciating pain. Thuney communicated with this young man and his parents following the event and invited the family out to a spring practice. He has been elected by his teammates to the team's Leadership Council for the past three seasons.
The NFF will announce 15 finalists on Oct. 29, and each of them will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship. One of the finalists will be named the winner of the William V. Campbell Trophy at the 58th NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 8 in New York City, and his postgraduate scholarship will be increased to $25,000.
This year will mark the 56th year of the NFF National Scholar-Athlete Awards, which began in 1959. Fidelity Investments, a leading provider of not-for-profit workplace retirement savings plans in higher education, became the first presenting sponsor of the program in 2011 and became the presenting sponsor of the Campbell Trophy in 2014.
