RALEIGH, N.C. - Following this morning's opening practice of 2015 fall camp, third-year head coach Dave Doeren was asked if his team had a different attitude today than this time last year. Â
"Our attitude was fine last year," he replied. "But now we have more confidence. We have more guys who played in games who are back, even though we're still a young team with only 11 seniors. A lot of our juniors and sophomores are guys who have one or two years of playing time now. There aren't as many spots that haven't played in a college game."
The numbers back up that statement. Out of 21 scholarship sophomores on the roster, 20 earned a varsity letter last season. That experience manifests itself in depth and that depth is becoming strong competition. Â
"Competitive depth is our goal," Doeren continued. "We want to build a roster where guys want to compete against each other and beat each other out.
That confidence was evident during the grueling workout, as the energy level seemed just as high during Period 25 as it did during Period 1.
"It's fun to see the guys who have played come back and have confidence. Seeing them feeding off of each other and working with each other is great to see as a coach."
NOTES ON TODAY'S PRACTICE
Different Guys:Â When Doeren huddled his team up following practice, he praised sopohomore safety Germaine Pratt and junior wide receiver Johnathan Alston in front of their teammates, saying they were "completely different guys" from this time a year ago and praised them for their work during practice 1.
Attire:Â The team was in shorts with no pads for today's workout.
"They're all mine.": When asked about having a team of players that were mostly "his," Doeren had a quick response: "They're ALL mine. Even if I didn't recruit them, they're my guys and I love them all. I'm just as excited about seeing the senior class as I am the freshmen."
The Man in Charge: When asked about senior quarterback Jacoby Brissett, Doeren responded: "You can tell it's his team. He's very under control. He knows the system inside and out and he's helping Jalan [McClendon] and young Jakobi [Meyers] out there. He's pretty businesslike." Â
Number Changes: A few of veteran players were wearing new uniform numbers as they took the field today. Graduate safety Hakim Jones is now wearing No. 1, while redshirt junior Niles Clark is now No. 6, and sophomore CB Mike Stevens is wearing No. 30.
Rookies: 18 true freshman took the field for the first time today in a Wolfpack uniform (plus seven true freshmen who went through spring practice after enrolling in January. Freshman wide receiver Nyheim Hines said he was nervous for the entire practice. "I've waited my whole life for today," he said.
Crossing the Line:Â Garrett Bradbury, who redshirted at tight end last season and was moved to the defensive line before spring ball, is now at offensive guard wearing No. 65.
What's Next:Â The team will have meetings and walk-throughs tonight, and will be back at it again tomorrow morning.
