#PackCamp Day 12: Back and Forth

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Wolfpack football squad held its first full scrimmage of 2015 #PackCamp Saturday morning in Carter-Finley Stadium. Just 21 days out from the season opener versus Troy, the Pack worked for 2-1/2 hours in the workout.
Â
It was difficult to tell from watching which side of the ball came out on top.Â
Â
"I thought it was a good back and forth," said head coach Dave Doeren. "The offense moved the ball around pretty good and the defense came up with some stops. I was impressed with both sides and the way they competed.
Â
"It was physical and there was good leadership. We saw ups and downs and we got to see some good responses out of some adversity.  We're three weeks from the kick so we've just got to hold it together. Today will be really valuable film."
Â
Doeren said the team accomplished what he wanted it to accomplish.Â
Â
"We wanted to see the finish of plays – finish blocks, finish runs. Can we catch the ball with people on us? Can we throw the ball with people in our face, kick the ball with people around us? We also wanted to see some response. If it's a good play, can a guy control his emotions and keep playing or if it's a bad play can he let it go and move on from it?"
Â
The scrimmage ended with redzone and goalline work.Â
Â
"It's a tough position to be in on defense, but you've got to find a way to make a play," Doeren added. "The offense prevailed in most of those situations. The field is tilted their way obviously when you put the ball down on the 15. The defense held them on one series to a field goal. It was competitive."
Â
The early part of practice focused on special teams, and Doeren was impressed with freshman kicker Kyle Bambard. "I thought Kyle kicked the ball well today. He made a 53-yarder and a 47-yarder and kicked the ball really well."
Â
In addition to first team versus first team action, the Wolfpack's backup players also got plenty of work. "It was definitely fun to see our young players get a chance to get out there. The 3's got about 30 snaps today."
Â
The Schedule: Sunday will be a day off from practice. "Tomorrow we'll spend a lot of time with recovery and really grind the film with the players. There are things we've got to get better at three weeks out from the kick. We had a lot of special teams work this morning too, so we want to watch that and evaluate our personnel there."
Â
What was good? "I thought the tacking for the most part was good," Doeren continued. "I thought our contain in the pass rush lanes was good. I liked some of the down-the-field plays our offense made. I was able to see some of the young players. Nyheim [Hines] had a touchdown on a long pass and it was good to be able to see him do some things.Â
Â
Shuffling the Line: Doeren said that in the next week, there would be some shuffling among the offensive line. That shuffling doesn't mean the lineup will necessarily change though.
"Even if we don't want to change, the five we have will shuffle because we have to cross train some guys. They have to be able to play left and right sides and be able to play tackle or guard. Tony Adams will be our backup center so he has to play some center. It allows us to move some guys around and do that."Â
