Coach talks 2015-16 team with local media
On the status of assistant coach Rob Moxley:
"He is still on a medical leave. The most important thing for him right now is for him to get better. He has not returned to work. There is not an exact date for him to come back. Our number one goal is to give him some time, and let him get back to 100%. That is the most important thing to us. Jeff Dunlap has assumed his recruiting responsibilities for right now. With Rob, it is a wait and see. We are going to see how much he can progress."
On Trevor Lacey:
"With Trevor, we're going to miss having a fifth-year senior who could've be one of the best guards in the conference. You can't replace his age and maturity. We are going to miss that."
On the addition of Terry Henderson:
"Terry Henderson did a great job of improving while redshirting. We wanted him to improve his ball handling, getting the ball to the rim and his defense. He took a big step forward in all of those things. He has actually led us in rebounding in a few of our scrimmages. It is nice to have a guard that can rebound the basketball. That is a quality that is overlooked sometimes. I think he has a chance to be a really good player. We are excited about Terry."
On Transfers:
"What has helped us with the guys that transfer in, is what they have done with the year they sit out. Ralston did a great job during his year. We have been strategic for the guys we have tried to get. Terry Henderson is a guy from Raleigh. I really liked him in high school, and I felt like I made a mistake by not recruiting him as hard out of high school. We had a second chance to recruit him. That was unique. For us, it is just a matter of see who fits and how we can use that year."
On Abdul-Malik Abu:
"With Malik, he has to become a more-effective high-percentage scorer. He needs to become a legitimate scoring threat that can consistently make a 15-foot jump shot. He has to make that step and become a first, second or third option in our offense."
On Anthony 'Cat' Barber:
"Cat has been as hungry to get better as anyone that we have had. During that first year, he wasn't a strong shooter or a confident shooter. Guys would play away from him and not really defend him."We'll see when the lights come on, but he is shooting the three as good as anybody in the gym. We've had some fast break situations where if he doesn't have the ball, he is running to the three-point line. He wants to catch it, shoot it and make it. I think Cat is in a position to have a unbelievable year. He has improved to a point where he should be in the conversation as one of the best point guards in the nation."
On continuity of the coaching staff:
"I have been fortunate with our staff. They've had opportunities to move on and become head coaches, but they have stayed. It is good to have the whole staff. One thing nice about our group is that they work well together. The roles are defined."
On development of the team:
"With this team, we are going to miss some of the offense, but we gain athleticism. Cat proved last year he is one of the best on the ball defenders in the country. He can draw charges as a primary defender as good as I have ever seen. Whether it is Terry, Caleb or Cody playing the perimeter, we are going to gain quickness and length. That can be a good defensive team. We also need to see if BeeJay Anya can develop. He has the potential to be a good rim protector."
