Staats Battle is going pro. The former NC State men's basketball player, who earned a scholarship as a senior in 2014-15, will continue his academic and basketball career in Ireland.
"Being born and raised in Raleigh, living in a different country is an amazing opportunity for me to grow as a person and experience something new," Battle said.
Battle, who appeared in 24 games for the Wolfpack from 2011-15, earned a spot in the Victory Scholar program, which is run by the Sport Changes Life Foundation. The foundation is an outreach service to help underprivileged chlidren become involved in sports. Battle, along with other men in the program, will be working in the community, at basketball camps and will tutor children after school.
"Basketball is a major part of my life and has helped me become the person I am today so I'm excited to be a part of the Sport Changes Life Foundation and give back to the sport that has done so many great things for me," he said.
Battle will play for the University of Limerick in Ireland while earning an advanced degree in financial services. Battle earned his degree in finance at NC State. He will also compete in the Irish Premier Basketball League for the UL Eagles.
"I'm eager to continue to learn more about the financial world and to be continuing my basketball career for another year.
"I'd like to thank Pete Strickland, Bryan Nieman and the current NC State coaching staff for their help in getting me this opportunity. I'm going to take the work ethic I learned at NC State and give it all on the court next year in Ireland."
