RALEIGH, N.C. - This weekend members of the NC State wrestling team will be competing at the Junior and Senior World Team Trials in Madison, Wis. Two-time NCAA champion Nick Gwiazdowski, along with current assistant coach Adam Hall and 2012 grad Quinton Godley will all be vying for a spot on the Senior level World Team, while 2015 All-American Kevin Jack, junior Pete Renda, and redshirt freshman Malik McDonald will all be competing for a spot on the Junior World team.
Over the weekend of May 30th, the NC State wrestling team sent 21 wrestlers to compete at the University Freestyle and Greco Roman National Tournament in Akron, Ohio. The team fared well and was able to capture four All-America honors between the two divisions.
Redshirt junior Mike Kosoy was able to secure All-America honors in both freestyle and greco roman in the heavyweight division. After suffering a loss in his first match of the tournament in greco roman, Kosoy was able to bounce back with four wins in his final five matches to place fifth in freestyle. In the wrestlebacks, Kosoy was able to put up two technical fall wins and outscored his opponents 27-2.
Kosoy followed up his greco roman performance with a fourth place finish in freestyle, going 5-2 in the tournament. Kosoy was able to avenge a loss from this previous collegiate season, beating Mimmo Lytle of Kent State by a score of 3-0. After losing to Nathan Butler of Stanford in the quarterfinals, Kosoy reeled off three straight wins to make it to the consolation finals. This included a 3-0 win over NCAA qualifier Blaze Cabell of Northern Iowa.
Returning 2015 NCAA Qualifier Max Rohskopf also competed in both freestyle and greco roman. Rohskopf was able to reach the semifinals before suffering a loss to Burke Paddock of the University of Iowa. He rebounded with a win over NCAA Qualifier Tyrel White of Columbia by a score of 9-5. Rohskopf lost in his consolation final match to Jacen Petersen of Arizona State, but still managed to take home fourth place.
In his return to the mat for the first time since January, redshirt senior Tommy Gantt capped off an impressive tournament with a third place finish for the Pack. Gantt looked impressive in the tournament, wearing opponents out with his non-stop attacks and amassing 69 points. Gantt's only loss was a match against NCAA All American Ian Miller of Kent State, in which he took Miller down four times but came up just short, 9-8.
