NC State started its quest for an ACC Championship with a 3-0 shutout of Notre Dame on Thursday at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

Brian Brown (7-3) captured the win on a career-high 10 strikeouts, the first double-digit punchout performance for a Wolfpack (32-20) pitcher since Cory Wilder pulled the feat April 2 against Florida State. Brown struck out five in a row during the second and third inning, and finished by retiring nine in a row and 14 of his last 15. In six frames, Brown limited the Irish (35-20) to two hits and two walks.

Curt Britt scored his second save of the year and picked up the string of retired batters Brown left him, retiring his first six faced, three on strikeouts. An infield single to lead off the ninth ended the tandem's run at 15 retired in order, and granted Notre Dame its only baserunner after the fourth. Britt finished with one hit allowed in three innings, no runs, no walks, and four strikeouts.

Joe Dunand drove in the game's first run following back-to-back one-out singles from Andrew Knizner and Preston Palmeiro in the top first. Knizner scored next on Ryne Willard's lone RBI in a 2-for-4 contest. Willard and Knizner represented the Pack's only multi-hit efforts, Knizner supplying a 2-for-4 afternoon with a run and RBI.

Bubby Riley extended the team's longest active hitting streak to seven games in a 1-for-4 day. Brock Deatherage and Jake Fincher each reached on bunt singles, with Fincher scoring.
