NC State baseball carried a two-run advantage into the bottom seventh, but a trio of unearned runs ultimately proved too much to overcome, as the Pack fell 7-5 at Elon's Walter C. Latham Park on Tuesday night.

The Wolfpack (19-12) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second thanks in part to three wild pitches from Elon (15-16) starter Mike Krill. The Phoenix rallied to tie and then took a 3-1 lead in the fourth. State charged back behind three in the fifth and a solo shot in the seventh to snag a 5-3 advantage. Elon tied it 5-5 in the bottom seventh, setting the stage for two in the eighth to score a 7-5 win.

Jake Fincher hit his third homer of the year and second in less than a week, part of a 3-for-5 day with two runs and an RBI. Ryne Willard had one of State's two doubles in a 2-for-4 performance with a run.

Preston Palmeiro had the other two-bagger, his only hit in a 1-for-4 contest. Logan Ratledge and Brock Deatherage each scored once with a single, Ratledge adding his team-leading eighth stolen base of the season.

Wolfpack starter Jon Olczak left in the third. Travis Orwig relieved him and worked the next 2 2/3 with three punchouts, holding Elon to one unearned run on two hits and no walks. Joe O'Donell was the next out of the pen, lasting 2/3 with one strikeout, one walk, and a one unearned.

Will Gilbert (0-1) took the loss after pitching the final out of the eighth and first two of the ninth, allowing one earned on no hits with two punchouts and a walk. Tommy DeJuneas provided one strikeout in 1/3 of an inning.
