RALEIGH, N.C. - Perfect weather led to a great crowd for the 2015 Kay Yow Spring Game. The culmination of the Pack's Spring Practice, the NC State football team was on display for fans at Carter-Finley Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The RED squad came away with a 16-3 win over the WHITE team, with Wolfpack fans donating over $16,000 which will be split between the Kay Yow Cancer Fund and the Wolfpack Club's Kay Yow Endowment.
Jacoby Brissett played the first half and went 13-of-32 for 164 yards and 1 TD pass - 13 yards to Benson Browne. New back-up QB Jalan McClendon saw action for both sides, playing for the WHITE in the first half then switching over to RED for the second. He finished 16-of-36 for 144 seeing his first action inside Carter-Finley Stadium.
Matt Dayes finished with 57 yards rushing and 41 yards receiving, while freshman RB Reggie Gallaspy II combined for 131 yards on the ground. Fourteen different receivers caught a pass on the day.
NC State will open the 2015 football season at home on Sept. 5 against Troy. The game will serve as Wolfpack Club Day and the kickoff time is to be determined.
Head Coach Dave Doeren:
On defense:
"There was a lot of back and forth. I thought the red team's defensive line did a nice job squeezing the run lanes. Darian Roseboro showed up in the second half, so did Bradley Chubb and Kentavious Street. It was good to see that. On the back end, there weren't a lot of big plays."
On offensive production:
"On offense, we didn't turn the ball over. We stayed healthy. A lot guys played. Jaylen Samuels made some explosive plays, so did Reggie Gallaspy II. Matt Dayes had a good run. There were some good things out there. When we get our full team out there where everyone is healthy, it creates a few more things we can do on offense, but we got out of it what we wanted. We stayed healthy and a lot of guys got worked."
On ways to improve for fall:
"We need to have a great summer. We need the guys that were out today to get healthy. We have about a month for our guys to get healthy, and then we will crank up for the eight-week summer period. We need to have a really good summer and come into fall camp at full strength with 105 bodies."
On young team:
"Even though we had a lot of young guys play last year, we're still a young team. We only have 10 seniors. We need everyone who played to come on and have a good summer and come into the fall ready to go."
