Nearly 1,000 fans turned up on short notice for a game announced late Tuesday night, NC State baseball's makeup contest with Appalachian State (5-6), which the Wolfpack pulled out in thrilling fashion, scoring a 6-4 comeback win at Doak Field at Dail Park on Wednesday.
The Pack (7-3) won its second game in as many days, but the outcome remained in question until the late innings. Facing a 4-3 deficit at the stretch, NC State scored the tying run on Preston Palmeiro's RBI single to center, part of his 2-for-4 day with three RBIs and a run scored. In the eighth, Jake Armstrong provided the clutch hit, a two-out RBI double to the wall in right. The Wolfpack added an insurance run, and rode Tommy DeJuneas the rest of the way to a 6-4 win.
DeJuneas (1-0) scored his first collegiate win by punching out six of the 10 batters he faced on the night, after entering with two on, two out, and the Pack trailing 4-3. The freshman delivered a called strike three to escape, then faced the minimum without allowing a hit over the next three innings. His lone baserunner allowed came in the seventh, promptly wiped out by an Andrew Knizner dart to second. Knizner has quickly proven himself behind the dish, throwing out five of six runners attempting to steal this season.
Ryan Williamson went 4 1/3 in a starting capacity, allowing four runs, two earned, with five strikeouts and no walks. Evan Brabrand was the first man up, working 1/3. Travis Orwig made his second appearance of the year next, striking out a pair with two hits surrendered.
Brock Deatherage established himself as a capable leadoff hitter, contributed a career-best 3-for-4 performance with a run and an RBI. Ryne Willard went 3-for-4 as well, including a double, his third extra-base hit of the year. Freshman Josh McLain supplied his first collegiate hit in a 1-for-3 game while scoring the fifth inning run to chop App's lead in half.
NC State returns to action on Friday, March 6 for the first of three games hosting Clemson. Game times for the series have been shifted to 3 PM/3 PM/1 PM to avoid complications with weather.
