RALEIGH, N.C.- The NC State women's tennis team split its doubleheader inside J.W. Isenhour Center Saturday. The squad narrowly fell to conference opponent Louisville 4-3, then battled back to defeat James Madison 5-2.
The Pack moves to 6-4 (0-2 ACC) on the season, while Louisville improves to 10-5 (2-0 ACC) and James Madison moves to 5-3 (1-0 CAA) on the 2015 dual season.
Simon Says
"We could have done better in both matches; both could have ended quicker and more efficiently. We must do better from a focus standpoint. Through all of that though, it was good to get the win in the second match."
"Georgia Tech won't make it easy for us tomorrow, but I am confident we are prepared for the match even after today's doubleheader. It will make us a stronger team in the long run."- Simon Earnshaw, head coach
Match One v. Louisville (4-3)
Match Highlights
NC State clinched the doubles point in its match against the Cardinals. The duo of Elisha Hande and Joanna Nalborska as well as the pair of Sophie Nelson and Nicole Martinez defeated their doubles opponents.
After dropping the doubles match on court three, Nelson and Martinez came out victorious on court one with a score of 8-3 over the tandem of Ariana Rodriguez and Elle Stokes. Hande and Nalborska were the deciding factors in which team won the doubles point, as they defeated Louisville's tandem of Chloe Willetts and Olivia Boesing.
Martinez grabbed the second point for the Wolfpack by defeating Cassie Pough in straight sets 6-1, 6-4. After narrowly beating Louisville's Jessie Paul in a first set tiebreaker 7-6 (7-4), Naborska grabbed the Wolfpack's third point by winning the second set 6-2.
The match came down to the wire to court five, as the overall score was tied 3-3 at that point. Nelson won her first set 6-3, but dropped her second set 3-6. Nelson fought to extend the third set to a seven-point tiebreaker, narrowly falling to Willetts 6-7 (7-3).
