THE RUNDOWN
- On Opening Day, the first five Wolfpack batters reached, amounting to a 5-0 lead. State tacked on five more in the second, and another in the third to make it 11-0. Two more in the sixth made it 13-0, before Villanova finally chipped away with three in the seventh.
- NC State is batting .392 as team following opening weekend.
- Andrew Knizner, a preseason All-American at third base, has transitioned to catcher and faired well, finishing the weekend without a passed ball and turning in a 3-for-8 (.375), four RBI performance at the plate.
- Logan Ratledge spent both games in the leadoff spot, going 5-for-8 (.625) with four runs and two RBIs. The Pack started sophomore Cory Wilder and freshman Evan Mendoza on the mound, with a combined 9.1 IP of college experience between then. Wilder and Mendoza combined to work 10 IP, allowing one earned on six hits with nine strikeouts, each securing a win.
- NC State’s Preston Palmeiro reached base in all nine plate appearances over the weekend, smashing seven hits including his first collegiate homer, reaching once on an error and drawing one walk. His five-hit performance on Saturday represents the Pack’s first since Andrew Knizner pulled the feat on March 15, 2014.
- Palmeiro went 5-for-5 with a run and an RBI on Saturday while flashing the leather at first, making a diving grab to close the eighth inning with Davidson runners on the corners. His home run against Villanova, a three-run rocket pasted down Varsity Drive into the trees in right, stretched State’s opening day lead to 10-0 with nobody out in the second. The sophomore set career single-game highs for hits, homers, runs, and RBIs by Saturday, currently sporting an .875 batting average, 1.250 SLG, and .889 OBP.
