RALEIGH, N.C. - On the same day the 25th-ranked NC State wrestling team earned a dominating 27-12 ACC win over 14th-ranked Pittsburgh, 11 other Wolfpack wrestlers were in action at the Newberry Open. NC State claimed titles in three weight classes (149, 197 and 285 pounds), and of the 11 wrestlers that competed nine brought home at least a fourth place finish.
On the day, NC State’s wrestlers went 40-11, with four of those losses coming against fellow Pack wrestlers.

149 pounds: NC State dominated the bracket, as the four Pack entrants all finished in the top four. Sophomore Brian Hamann claimed top honors going 5-0 and winning the championship over teammate redshirt sophomore Cohl Fulk 5-0. Fulk claimed a pin and a major decision getting to the championship. Freshman Chandler Pyke took third, and redshirt freshman Jake DeAngelo was fourth.
197 pounds: A pair of freshmen placed in the top-three, Malik McDonald (1st) and Derrick Maisonet (3rd). McDonald was 3-0 on the day with a pin and two decisions, including a 10-6 win over Gardner-Webb’s Zach Bennett in the championship. Maisonet fell in his opening bout, but came back strong to win three straight and claim third.
