FIRST ROUND RESULTS
CHAPEL HILL - Four players shot 1-over par 73 on Friday to lead the NC State women's golf team in a balanced effort during the first round of the Tar Heel Invitational. The Wolfpack stands tied for third among the 18-team field, which included six of the nation's top 25 teams.
India Clyburn, Naomi Ko, Cecily Overbey and Laura Kowohl each fired a 73 to put the Wolfpack in the hunt after the first round. NC State (+4) is tied with Louisville and is just three shots behind Alabama for second place in the standings. Duke (-3) leads the tournament field.
"We have a talented team. Anytime you play tournament golf, sometimes expectations get in the way," head coach Page Marsh said. "I was really proud of how much they looked like they enjoyed playing today. We worked on staying relaxed. It's a relaxed intensity. They did a really good job of handling their emotions. We talked about that a lot to handle emotions and stay positive so you can play to the best of your ability."
The Wolfpack posted 10 birdies on the front nine and found itself in first place early, but momentarily slid right after the turn before recovering. Clyburn birdied on holes 14 and 15, while Overbey and Kowohl birdied on 16 and 17, respectively.
Ko led the team with five birdies, while Clyburn recorded four. Sarah Bae, who shot 77 on the day, had three birdies. Friday's round was the first collegiate outing for Kowohl, a freshman from Germany. She was 1-over on the front nine and even on the back nine, while carding two birdies on the day.
NC State and Louisville are one shot ahead of Michigan State and three shots better than host school UNC-Chapel Hill. Michigan State's Katie Sharp (-4) was Friday's top individual.
The Tar Heel Invitational continues Saturday morning and concludes Sunday.
