Martina Frantova set to play in ITF Hilton Head 10K tournament after play at ITF Charleston 10K was officially cancelled due to weather
CHARLESTON, S.C. – Play at the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Charleston 10K tournament was officially cancelled on Monday afternoon due to rain. Prior to the cancellation there had been three complete days of postponed matches and a delay in play during a final attempt on Monday morning.
NC State's Martina Frantova had advanced to the semifinal round of main draw play at the time of cancellation.
"Martina did a really good job of staying focused, understanding what the goal was. I thought she handled the adversity very professionally. I'm pleased with the level of tennis I've seen so far, of course we had some ups and downs in certain situations but she was able to pull through." – Gina Suarez-Malaguti, assistant coach
Her second round main draw match was suspended on Thursday due to weather. At the time of call Frantova had conquered 6-2 in the first set and was down 1-4 in the second set to her No. 655 ranked opponent Natalia Siedliska (Germany). Following two complete days of delayed play, match play was officially retired on Saturday and Frantova advanced to the quarterfinal round.
Frantova was set to face off against No. 900 Francesca Di Lorenzo (USA) in the quarterfinal round. Tournament play was unable to resume on Saturday or Sunday due to inclement weather and she advanced to the semifinal round following a walkover declared on Monday morning.
Match play in the semifinal round temporarily resumed on Monday afternoon. Frantova faced off against Ulrikke Eikeri (Norway), winning 6-3 in the first set. Match play was suspended during the second set due to weather and did not resume.
"I thought I had a pretty good tournament considering the weather situation. I felt pretty good about my game and the way I competed. The weather was just another challenge when it came to maintaining focus when on some days I didn't even touch my racket. It is too bad that we couldn't finish the tournament but I am really looking forward to playing in Hilton Head, I just want to play." – Martina Frantova, junior
Up Next:
Frantova will travel to Hilton Head Island, S.C., to compete in the ITF Hilton Head 10K. She will begin tournament play on Wednesday with first round main draw matches in both singles and doubles.
Frantova is set to partner with Alexandra Perper (Moldova) in doubles competition, facing off against duo Natalie Pluskota (USA) and Caroline Price (USA) in round one of main draw play. Perper is listed at No. 888 and Price at the No. 905 spot among Women's Tennis Association (WTA) rankings.
Main draw singles competition will begin with a match-up between Frantova and No. 856 Elixane Lechemia (France).
