RALEIGH, N.C. - Brett Austin’s three-RBI triple in the bottom first set the tone as NC State baseball cruised to a 7-1 win over Georgia Tech on Sunday at Doak Field at Dail Park.
The Wolfpack (24-19, 9-15 ACC) scored its first three runs on Austin’s triple. Austin scored on Jake Fincher’s RBI single to take a 4-0 lead through the first. State tacked on three more in the second to make it 7-0. Georgia Tech (26-19, 12-12) scored once in the fifth to set the final at 7-1.
The triple was Austin’s fourth of the year, and his lone hit of the ballgame. Fincher finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. Trea Turner hit his eighth double of the season in a 1-for-4 game with two runs, an RBI, and a walk. Andrew Knizner went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Preston Palmeiro, Logan Ratledge, and Garrett Suggs each singled once.
Wolfpack reliever Joe O’Donnell (2-0) scored the win on 3 1/3 innings of work, holding Tech to one unearned run on two hits while striking out three and walking none. Logan Jernigan started and pitched well despite a short outing after starting Wednesday’s win over UNCW. Jernigan fanned five and held the Jackets scoreless on two hits through 2 1/3.
D.J. Thomas relieved him and pitched a scoreless inning. Brad Stone looked solid in 1 1/3 innings of relief, limiting Tech to one hit and one walk. Cory Wilder finished the game with a perfect ninth.
NC State’s first inning rally started with Turner’s one-out walk. Knizner followed with a single to left, then Chance Shepard walked to load the bases. Austin fired a triple into the right field corner to score all three. Fincher singled up the middle to score him next.
In the second, Ratledge singled on a chopper in front of the plate, and advanced to third on a two-base throwing error. Turner doubled to the wall in left center to make it 5-0. Knizner singled to right to score Turner from second. Shepard and Palmeiro walked to load the bases, setting up Fincher’s sac fly to right to extend the lead to 7-0.
NC State does not play a midweek game due to exams, and will return to action on Friday, May 2 at 6:30 p.m., hosting Coastal Carolina for the first of a three-game series. Radio coverage for the weekend will be provided by 88.1 WKNC. Fans can also follow along with live stats on GoPack.com, or Twitter updates from @NCStateBaseball.
