RALEIGH, N.C. - T.J. Warren scored a career-high 34 points to go along with a game-high 10 rebounds as the NC State men's basketball defeated Wake Forest 82-67 on Tuesday night at PNC Arena.
The Wolfpack won its fourth straight home contest as Warren notched the seventh double-double of his career and fifth this season, posting career-highs in points (34), field goals made (15) and field goal attempts (26). Ralston Turner scored 16 points, while Anthony 'Cat' Barber added 10 as NC State improves to 16-8 (6-5 ACC).
"This is a good win for our team, I am proud of our young group," NC State head coach Mark Gottfried said. "Offensively, T.J. Warren was spectacular and Ralston Turner gave us some great perimeter shooting in the first half. I can go through every guy. BeeJay Anya comes in and gives us some great minutes and blocked some shoots. Lennard Freeman was really good. Kyle Washington had a couple of good shots. In the second half, Desmond Lee had five assists which were big. Tyler Lewis and Anthony 'Cat' Barber both played well collectively. Defensively we were a lot better in the first half than the second half. I thought how we guarded them in the second half was the difference in the game."
Warren started fast, scoring 14 of the Pack's first 30 points while connecting on six-of-seven shots, including five straight at one point. From there, he didn't slow down, scoring nine more points to ignite a 16-6 Wolfpack run over the final 4:53 of the half, turning a close game that featured six ties and five lead changes into a 46-38 halftime advantage for State.
Following intermission, Wake Forest scored the initial bucket of the half before a three-pointer by Turner gave the Wolfpack a 49-40 lead. From there, State held a working margin of no fewer than nine points over the next seven minutes of action, before a 12-0 run midway through the half helped the Pack seize control of the game and take its biggest lead, 68-47, at the 8:30 juncture.
State maintained the double-digit advantage for the remainder of the game as Warren notched his final basket at the 2:15 mark before coming out of the game to a deserving standing ovation from the Wolfpack faithful. Over his last two games Warren has averaged 30.5 points, including a combined 42 points from the start of the second half of State's last game versus Miami to the end first half tonight against Wake Forest.
Codi Miller-McIntyre scored a team-high 15 point for Wake Forest 14-10 (4-7).
For its next game, the Wolfpack will hit the road to take on No. 1 and undefeated Syracuse this Saturday, Feb. 15. Tip-off from the Carrier Dome is scheduled for 3 p.m.
