The Starting 5 - The top 5 storylines for this game
1. New Team, New Season
Saturday's exhibition contest against Queens University of Charlotte will serve as NC State's final tune-up prior to the Wolfpack's regular season opener Friday, Nov. 14 vs. Jackson State. The Pack will play 20 homes games this season, including 18 contests at PNC Arena. The nonconference slate features home games against 2014 NCAA tourney teams Cincinnati, Tennessee and Wofford in addition to games against Louisiana Tech (29-8 last year), Boise State (21-13) and Richmond (19-14).
2. A Friendly vs. Queens
When NC State called the coaching staff at Queens to set up a closed scrimmage, that set into motion a chance for the Division II Royals to come and play the Wolfpack. NC State's staff inquired about playing a Nov. 1 closed scrimmage at Queens, and the Queens coaching staff asked for a chance to play NC State in an exhibition. The Wolfpack happened to need an opponent for its season-opening exhibition and the connection was made.
3. First Look At Trevor
Saturday evening will be the first chance for Wolfpack fans to see redshirt junior guard Trevor Lacey in action. Lacey, who played two seasons at Alabama and then sat out last season after transferring to NCSU, is expected to be a significant contributor for the Pack this season. Saturday's exhibition will be Lacey's first time playing in a basketball game since March 26, 2013.
4. New Freshmen
NC State's three scholarship freshmen will be getting their first action on the floor at PNC Arena this Saturday. Abdul-Malik Abu, a 6-8 forward from Boston, and 6-6 twins Caleb and Cody Martin will make their debuts against Queens. All three newcomers appeared in the national recruiting rankings for the class of 2014. As a signing class, the trio was ranked 16th nationally by 247Sports and 18th by ESPN.
5. 3 Seasons, 3 NCAAs
Mark Gottfried, in his fourth season at NC State, will be working toward mentoring his team into the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight season. The Wolfpack has made the Big Dance in each of his first three seasons, making Gottfried the first Pack coach and just the third in ACC history to achieve that feat. It marks the first time NC State had made three straight tournaments since 2004-06.
