Happy Anniversary, Carter-Finley!
This Homecoming contest versus Georgia Tech will mark the 300th game played in the venerable Carter-Finley Stadium. The Wolfpack posts a 189-104-6 mark on its home field since the first game against South Carolina on Oct. 8, 1966.
Carter-Finley Stadium was originally designed by architect Charles Kahn, a distinguished professor in the NC State School of Design from 1959-1968.
The stadium is named in honor of Wilbert James (Nick) Carter (1902-1972), Harry Clifton Carter (1908-1990) and Albert Earle Finley (1895-1985). The Carter brothers graduated from NC State’s College of Textiles and became top executives in the J. P. Stevens Company. Although not an NC State graduate, Finley was also a strong supporter of the athletics program. The owner of the Raleigh Tractor and Equipment Company, Finley also donated a motel on Western Boulevard to the Wolfpack Club to be used as an athletics dormitory - the College Inn.
Wolfpack Looks for Bowl Eligibility
Heading into the 2014 campaign, one of NC State’s team goals was to advance to a bowl game and then win it. The Wolfpack is one win away from accomplishing the first part of that goal, posting a 5-4 record heading into the final three games of the season.
Dave Doeren has coached bowl eligible teams nine of the 12 years he’s been a full-time D1 coach.
Timely Takeaways
NC State has forced 14 turnovers this season - picking off seven passes and recovered seven fumbles. Ten of those times the Pack D has given the ball to the offense, the offense has punched it in for points.
At Syracuse, DE Pharoah McKever had a Pick-Six and State’s only offensive touchdown came after Rodman Noel forced a fumble that was recovered by Kenton Gibbs at the Syracuse 35 yardline. At the end of the game, with Syracuse down a touchdown and driving, S Josh Jones sealed the victory with another INT.
The Wolfpack did not have any takeaways at Louisville and had just one in the three games prior to last week’s win.
JaySam the Man
Freshman fullback Jaylen Samuels doesn’t see an abundance of action. In fact, in nine games this season, he’s played just 75 snaps from scrimmage. However, the rookie has the distinction of posting the team’s top rushing average and top receiving average.
Samuels has only carried the ball seven times, but has averaged 13.6 yards per carry. He was the team’s leading rusher in the win at Syracuse, even though he carried the ball just two times for 46 yards. He only has two catches for the season as well, but has averaged 22.5 yards on those grabs.
Samuels had averaged 15.6 yards every time he’s touched the ball this season.
Freshmen/Sophomores Dominate Stats
The chart above shows statistically how much freshmen and sophomores are dominating the Wolfpack statistically. Those two classes have accounted for 86% of the teams receiving yards and 88% of its touchdown scoring.
Super Sade Scores
Senior kicker Niklas Sade has a chance to become the leading scorer in NC State history this week, surpassing NFF Hall of Famer Ted Brown, who scored 312 points from 1975-78.
Sade has scored 306 points in his career, a mark which ranks second in school history. He needs seven points to break Brown’s school mark.
Here’s a look at the leading scorers in school history:
Sade has already set one NC State career record with 149 career PATs - which ties as the ninth-best mark in ACC history. With 49 career field goals, he is two shy of tying Mike Cofer’s school mark.
Pack Sack Attack
The Wolfpack has really revved up its sack attack in the last two games. After tallying just 12 sacks in the first seven contests, State has tallied 11 in the last two games - including eight at Syracuse.
Senior defensive end Art Norman leads the team with 5.5 sacks for the season, but 4.5 of those have come in the last two games.
Home Sweet Home
The Wolfpack hasn’t played a home game in almost a month, as the last time State played on its home field was Oct. 11 versus Boston College. Since then, Dave Doeren’s squad has traveled to Louisville, had an open week and then played at Louisville.
True and Tried
Seven different true freshmen have earned starts for NC State in 2014 - the fifth-highest total in the FBS. True freshman wide receiver Bo Hines has started six contests for the Pack, offensive guard Tony Adams has started five while linebacker Airius Moore and defensive tackle B.J. Hill have each started a pair. Safety Germaine Pratt, tight end Cole Cook and WR Stephen Louis have also started games for the Pack this season.
Senior Specialists Make History
NC State is the only school in the country that boasted a fourth-year returning starter at punter, placekicker and long snapper heading into the 2014 campaign.
That trio has not only played in the last 47 straight games for State, but punter Wil Baumann and placekicker Niklas Sade have both set Wolfpack career records.
Against Syracuse, Sade became the Pack’s all-time career leader in field goals, and now has 52 for his career. He broke the mark of 50 set by Mike Cofer from 1982-86. Last season, he set the all-time PAT mark and now boasts 150 - the ninth-best mark in ACC history.
Sade needs just seven points to break the Wolfpack career scoring mark of 312 held by Ted Brown (1975-78). His 306 career points ties as the 19th-best mark in ACC history.
Baumann, a nominee for the Ray Guy Award, has set the school marks for punts (248) and punting yards (10,098). That yardage total ranks fifth in ACC history. With a 40.7 yard career average, he ranks sixth in school history.
Grinnage Tight End to “Watch”
Redshirt sophomore tight end David J. Grinnage has been named to the midseason ‘watch’ list for the John Mackey Award, which is given annually to the most outstanding collegiate tight end. Grinnage has 20 receptions for 282 yards this season and has scored three touchdowns. He boasts the best yards/reception mark on the team for players with more than two catches.
Grinnage is one of 33 student-athletes named to the midseason list.
