RALEIGH, N.C. - In pregame ceremonies for yesterday’s home finale against Wake Forest, NC State honored its seniors. After kickoff, the seniors returned the favor.
It was fitting that on a day that saw the youth-dominated Wolfpack accomplish several of its season goals, members of the senior class made the plays that turned those goals into realities.
On the first play from scrimmage in the game, defensive tackle Thomas Teal, a redshirt senior, stuffed the Wake running back for a loss of one, setting the tone for a defensive effort that saw the Deacons gain just 58 total rushing yards.
Later in the first quarter, senior running back Tony Creecy scored the first of five rushing touchdowns for the day.
In quarter two, senior placekicker Niklas Sade put the exclamation point on the Wolfpack’s second touchdown of the game with the kick that set a new NC State scoring record, breaking the mark set by legendary running back Ted Brown almost 40 years ago..
Senior Day continued in the second half, as wideout Bryan Underwood turned on the jets on the opening play, taking a reverse 75 yards to the house.
Other members of the senior class made plays all afternoon. The offensive line, led by senior tackles Rob Crisp and Tyson Chandler, paved the way for 362 rushing yards on the day – the highest total for the Wolfpack since 1990 and the seventh-highest tally in school history. Defensive end Art Norman moved a step closer to the Wolfpack career sack record with a dramatic 10-yard drop in the second half. Punter Wil Baumann maintained his spot as the ACC leader in punting average.
The game ended with the Wolfpack bowl eligible and having doubled its win total from a season ago – both team goals heading into the 2014 campaign. And although Dave Doeren’s second squad will go down in history as one of the youngest ever to take the field at NC State, on Saturday, the Wolfpack’s senior class made it a day to remember.
