LEXINGTON, Va. - The NC State rifle team put together a solid performance against the second-ranked Kentucky Wildcats on Sunday at VMI's Rifle Range, but were not able to defeat the Wildcats and suffered its third loss of the season.
The Wildcats (3-0, 3-0 GARC) fired a team score of 4650 (2356 in air rifle & 2294 smallbore), while the Wolfpack (7-3, 0-3 GARC) shot a team total of 4584 (2320 in air rifle & 2264 smallbore).
Miller's Minute
Opening statement…
"Shooting late on Saturday and early on Sunday was a bit of a tiring schedule and it took a toll on our performance today," said head coach Keith Miller. "We're hitting all around our goals, but have yet to put everything together in one match. Saturday we shot our best air rifle of the year - just two points shy of the school record, but we also fired our lowest smallbore score of the season. On Sunday, our smallbore was up a little, but our air rifle score was down by about the same amount so our aggregate was pretty flat.
"We continue to hover just under 4600, but we need to be consistently at the 4600 level or above to reach our goals. Hopefully once we break 4600 we'll be able to stay at that level. For now, we'll just continue to work hard in training and focus on smoothing some rough edges."
Air Rifle Notes
- Redshirt junior Dani Foster and junior Daniel Cliff fired the Wolfpack's highest air rifle scores of the day with a result of 582.
- Sophomore Lucas Kozeniesky shot a score of 589, while junior Alex Martin charted a 576.
- Freshmen Caitlyn Ford and Derya Pekari each fired scores of 566 and Lee Price recorded a score of 564.
- Redshirt sophomore George Williams also competed in the event, registering a score of 559.
Smallbore Notes
- Kozeniesky's score of 580 in the smallbore discipline was good for a share of first place, along with UK's Connor Davis.
- Foster and Martin each tallied a score of 563, while Cliff recorded a total of 558.
- Ford shot a 553 and Pekari finished closely behind with a sum of 552.
- The final competitor in the event for the Wolfpack was Williams, who shot a 528.
