RALEIGH, N.C. – Junior Simonas Bilis of the NC State men’s swimming & diving team was named Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Male Swimmer of the Week, as announced by the conference office Tuesday afternoon.
A native of Panevezys, Lithuania, Bilis was sensational in the Wolfpack’s upset victory against top-five foe Georgia on Saturday at the Willis R. Casey Aquatic Center. The junior swept the three sprint freestyle events and sealed the team victory by anchoring the 400 free relay team that decided the outcome of the meet with a first-place finish.
Bilis recorded three NCAA ‘B’ cuts on the day, as he finished first in the 50 (19.96), 100 (43.74) and the 200 (1:37.02) freestyle events. His time in the 200 freestyle currently leads the country this season, while his time in the 50 and 100 free lead the conference and rank among the top five in the nation.
In addition, with State clinging to a small lead heading into the final 400 freestyle relay to decide the outcome of the meet, Bilis propelled his team to victory by completing the anchor leg. In the final relay, Bilis teamed with Ryan Held, David Williams, Andreas Schiellerup to break the pool record with a time of 2:56.12 and recorded the fastest time in the country this season in the event.
The Wolfpack will return to competition on Saturday, Oct. 25 in a tri-meet against Florida State and Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Ga. The meet is slated to get underway at 11 a.m.
