Some of the biggest names from one of college basketball's storied programs. All back together one more time in hallowed Reynolds Coliseum. Friday night's Throwback with the Pack allowed NC State fans to honor the past and get a look at the future in the same night.
The event began with the Legends Game, which featured NC State's all-time leading scorer, several members of the 1983 NCAA championship team and numerous other players who enjoyed lengthy NBA careers.
The White team won the Legends Game 44-39 behind 21 points from Rodney Monroe, who still tops NC State's scoring chart with 2,551 career points. The White team's point guard, Monte Towe of the 1974 championship team, dazzled the crowd with fancy passes and a pair of deep 3-pointers. Towe and Tom Gugliotta scored six each and Chris Corchiani added seven points.
The Red team featured 10 points from 2004 ACC Player of the Year Julius Hodge and eight from Vinny Del Negro.
After the Legends Game, the NC State women's basketball team was recognized and participated in a shooting promotion. That led into the Wolfpack's main event, as the current team took the floor individually wearing retro shades and pyrotechnics lighting the dark Reynolds Coliseum.
The Wolfpack, which has played in each of the last three NCAA Tournaments under head coach Mark Gottfried, broke off into teams and participated with one of the alums in a shooting contest involving a lay-up, a 3-pointer and a half-court shot.
NC State's intrasquad scrimmage concluded the night. The team played for 20 minutes with the team wearing red winning 27-20. Ralston Turner and Kyle Washington each scored seven points and Anthony `Cat' Barber dished five assists for the winning red team. Desmond Lee scored a game-high eight points for the team wearing white.
NC State will next take the floor Saturday, Nov. 8 when it plays Queens University in an exhibition.
