RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State rifle head coach Keith Miller announced the team’s schedule for the 2013-14 season on Tuesday. For the past three years, the Wolfpack rifle team has won the South Eastern Air Rifle Conference (SEARC) Championship and will look to do so again in 2014.
“We're really looking forward to this year's schedule,” said Miller. “It's not only a challenging schedule based on our competition, but we start earlier, travel farther, and shoot more matches than in any past year. There were several last minute changes, so we've been scrambling to get ready, but I think we'll be fine.”
The Pack opens with the first SEARC match of the season at VMI in Lexington, Va., on Saturday, Sept. 21. State will then make the trip to the Last Frontier to compete against the University of Alaska at Fairbanks and Ole Miss during fall break. It will face Ole Miss on Friday (Oct. 11) and Alaska Fairbanks on Saturday (Oct. 12).
“We’ve never gone to Alaska and we have a couple big matches there,” Miller added. “The matches will be important competitively, but it’s also a big trip for the students and they’ve been looking forward to it.”
After fall break, the Wolfpack will travel to Lexington, Ky., for a match against the University of Kentucky on Oct. 25 and then compete versus Memphis on Saturday, Oct. 26, at the same venue. The fifth SEARC match of the year will be held in Dahlonega, Ga., at North Georgia College & State University on Saturday, Nov. 9.
The squad’s last match before Christmas break will be against Navy in Annapolis, Md., on Nov. 16. The 2014 year will commence, Jan. 11, with a match at Murray State with Columbus State, followed by a trip to Morgantown, W. Va., to face the Mountaineers on Jan. 19.
“It's been close to 10 years since we've been to VMI, and more than that for Navy, so we're happy to have them back on our schedule,” Miller said.
On Jan. 25, State will travel to Charleston, S.C., for matches against The Citadel and VMI. After that contest, the Wolfpack will take on Nebraska and Army in West Point, N.Y., on Feb. 8-9.
The 2014 Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) Championships will take place Feb. 28- March 2 in Oxford, Miss., at Ole Miss. The SEARC championships will be held on March 8 in Charleston, S.C., at The Citadel.
