The Wolfpack (33-10) is in the midst of the program's longest winning streak since a 16-gamer in 2003, but it looked to be in jeopardy when Davidson (12-27) leapt out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the fifth. State answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth and two in the seventh to tie the game. That set up the Pack's ninth inning walk-off on a sac fly by Jake Fincher.
Fincher turned in a 1-for-3 performance with three RBIs and a walk, driving in both runs in the seventh on a two-out single and providing the game-winning sac fly to score Logan Ratledge from third. Ratledge singled to start the ninth and stole second, before advancing to third on a wild pitch to set the stage for the game's final play. Fincher reached base in his 41st of 43 games in 2013.
Trea Turner went 1-for-2 with a pair of runs and a career-high three walks, improving his batting average to .438. That number puts him at second in the nation and would break the NC State single-season record set in 1969 by Chris Cammack if the season ended today. Turner also extended his current hitting streak to 13 games and added his 18th stolen base of the season, upping his NC State career record to 75.
Grant Clyde continued his hot streak with a double and a stolen base in a 2-for-4 performance. The double is Clyde's 12th of the season and his eighth during the Pack's 15-game winning streak. Jake Armstrong had a pair of doubles for the first time in his young career to finish 2-for-4.
The Pack utilized six pitchers on the night, with Grant Sasser (3-0) picking up the win thanks to a perfect ninth inning. Starter Ethan Ogburn gave up two earned on four hits through the first four innings. Travis Orwig looked sharp with four strikeouts while holding Davidson to one hit over 2 2/3, his longest outing since Feb. 27.
Davidson reliever Michael Zeblo (1-1) ended up with the loss after giving up the winning run in 1 1/3 innings. Starter Nick Neitzel opened the game with three shutout innings, holding the Pack to two hits.
The Wildcats took a 3-0 lead in the fifth on a rally started by Sam Foy's single to left center. A pair of hit batsmen loaded the bases with nobody out. Chris Dyer's RBI single up the middle broke the scoreless tie. David Daniels doubled down the right field line to score the next two.
State crossed the plate for the first time in the sixth after Turner's leadoff double down the leftfield line. Turner stole third with one out and scored on a wild pitch two batters later. In the seventh, Armstrong led off with a double to left center. He moved to third on a sac fly. Turner walked to put runners on the corners and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Fincher singled to center field to score the pair.
In the decisive ninth, Ratledge led off with a single up the middle and stole second with one out. Turner drew an intentional walk to put runners on first and second, before Ratledge motored to third on a wild pitch during Fincher's at-bat. Fincher adjusted his gameplan and sent a sac fly to straightaway center to win the game.
NC State returns to action on Friday, April 26, at 6:30 p.m., hosting top-ranked North Carolina for the opening game of the "Showdown at the Doak," presented by Tyler's Restaurant & Taproom. Tickets for all three games of the series are sold out. Streaming coverage of game one will be provided by ESPN3.com. Radio duties will be handled by 88.1 WKNC. UNC's winning streak is over, but @ncstatebaseball extended its streak to 15 games, beating Davidson 4-3 on a walk-off sac fly in ninth.
