OXFORD, Miss. - The NC State rifle team placed eighth at the 2013 Great American Rifle Conference Championships this past weekend at the University of Mississippi.
The Wolfpack fired its third-highest team score in program history over the course of the weekend with a 4,619 total.
Junior Madeline Pike posted a team-high 586 in air rifle to lead NC State. Freshman Daniel Cliff notched a 585 score, as sophomore Dani Foster recorded a 579, while newcomer Alex Martin rounded out the team's top scores with a personal-best 578 mark.
"It was a good day for our team, and an awesome day for Maddy," said head coach Keith Miller. "Our team total for smallbore was the second highest of the year."
NC State fired a 2,290 in smallbore, led by Pike's team-high 585. Foster followed with a personal-best 582, Martin at 563 and graduate student Bryan Cross, competing in his final collegiate smallbore competition, triggered a 560.
Pike's 585 smallbore total also tied her personal best.
"It's important to note that all six other shooters on the line will be competing at the NCAAs in two weeks, so it's clear that this final was against some of the strongest shooters around," Miller said. "In fact, Maddy was only behind two of the top shooters anywhere in the world in Petra Zublasing (West Virginia) and Henri Junghanel (Kentucky). To perform at that level against Olympians and All-Americans speaks volumes for Maddy's growth as a shooter this year. We are all so very proud of her."
West Virginia won the GARC Championship with a 4,705 aggregate, followed by Kentucky (4,690) and Nebraska (4,647) to round out the top-three team finishes.
The Pack returns to action next Saturday, Mar. 2, at the Southeastern Air Rifle Conference Championships in Charleston, S.C.
